Yale Parents thread

Right^ At move-in and the convocation (pending Hurricane), the school admin told parents that Yale’s power plants keep the U running. So the U doesn’t generally have issues when the grid in Ct goes down.

As for people with kids at both H and Yale, why not root for the home team, where ever you are sitting…This year for Y, and next at H…?

Condolences to those impacted by the tragedy in lot D before The Game.

Also sorry the game/score wasn’t in Yale’s favor.

Wonder if the QB feels he made the right decision after the game? Think public pressure will be brought to bear so he gets to interview anyway? If this wasn’t the week of the Penn State scandal, I would expect public pressure because “football is king” mentality; this week, not so sure “football is king” mentality. will succeed as it might have done in the recent past.

I heard recently that there is another bus service (not CTLimo) that runs between Yale and Bradley International Airport, and the one-way fare is about $26. Is that service available on and right after the Game day only? Or, is it a regular service like CTLimo?

A few years ago, some Yale students (maybe Yale Student Council?) tried to provide this kind of service and many students wished it could be more dependable and cheaper than CTLimo. Unfortunately, the service was stopped after a few months or half a year.

Also, I am just curious: How “good” is the Apple Store next to the B&N/Yale bookstore? Is it very crowed during weekend? How about the newly opened Sushi Palace which is not far from Broadway/Marriott Courtyard Hotel? Is it as good as the original Sushi Palace that is farther away?

Regarding the Apple store, I can give you just one data point-- we went there to buy a computer for our daughter (class of 15) on a Saturday, the weekend before Parents’ weekend. It was busy, but well staffed, and we didn’t feel that it took an unreasonable amount of time to do what we needed to do. The employees were very busy, but they always seemed to find someone to take care of you.

When will your loved one fly back to campus if the class resumes on Monday? Is it on Saturday or on Sunday?

The reason why I ask this question: If a student’s destination airport is BDL and he/she travels on a day when very few students travel, it appears it is more likely CT Limo may not be there at the scheduled time because of the lack of business. Also, it feels “good” if the area near the campus is full of students upon your arrival. It is also because sometimes the students have no choice but eat out before the class resumes, so a student may want to find a friend or two to go to a restaurant together.

It seems to be the case that, the nearer the student’s hometown is, the later he/she arrives at the campus after a break.

Coming from two time zones away, the trip back East is always a bear and eats up most of the day unless you do a red eye which has it’s own set of negatives. Rather than sliding in late on Sunday evening and risking increased chances of travel delays because of the popularity of travel that day, my son is going back tomorrow. He’s getting into BDL at 4:00 and has a reservation on CTLimo, I certainly HOPE they pick him up! I figure he’ll catch up with some other early-returning friends and will be able to sleep in on Sunday, finish homework, etc. I would have liked to have him around for an extra day, but the pluses outweighed the minuses.

It is glad to know there are some other students who are going back tomorrow instead of Sunday. DS always went back one day earlier.

Our experience is that CTLimo will always pick up the customers eventually. A problem that he ran into (likely 3-4 times in the past, including our travel) in the past was it sometimes did not pick up on time. When this happened, it is as if they combined two scheduled pickups into one.

It is strange that, even if we live only one time zone away, DS’s arrival time is later than your son’s. It probably has some thing to do with the need of having two legs of flight in his case. Also, I think that flying into BDL tends to be more expensive than flying into, say, JFK. But we still prefer BDL because of its easy access to New Haven.

I really hope CTLimo has some frequent-rider program (We really gave them a lot of business in the past several years.) and it will treat these regular customers better. We even do not care whether they charge us a little bit more as long as they always puck up on time, as it is much cheaper than airfare that we have to pay anyway.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Both of my S’s have used CT Limo back and forth from Bradley and have never had a problem—knock on wood—even when they left on ‘off’ times like Thursday evenings or arrived back on a Friday or Saturday during break. S#2 goes back tomorrow. This is the first time ever we have used CT Limo back and forth from La Guardia. Coming home was no problem at all; picked up from Phelps right on schedule. Fingers crossed that going back works out well also.

We live in the same time zone as CT, about 6 hours away, but DS prefers to be back on Saturday anyway. I think he feels it’s more relaxing to have a transition day or something.

I agree with you that coming home is never a problem. They may even dispatch a bus instead of a van if the direction is from Phelps gate to BDL. Then, every student can fit in no matter how many students take the CTLimo.

Another question: Does you son/daughter tip the driver? (if it is a van.) If yes, how much?

Hi All

Kiddo took the shuttle as well. Will be interested to hear how the airport pickup went. The Phelps to BDL went smoothly—Kiddo said there was a large full sized charter bus.

We haven’t seen a frequent user plan on their site–so if thats the case, please post the link here. Kiddo booked it through the Yale travel site so that the Yale rate applies.

Kiddo flew home on Sunday afternoon and went back today. I was hoping getting kiddo back to campus today would allow for the mental transition back and kiddo mentioned there are 2 P sets and a practical exam for physics lab this week. So the next few days will be busy.

I was noting the time the Ct Limo has set for kiddo’s return after Christmas break–the flt arrives at 2:50 and they “suggest” a 3pm shuttle. The next shuttle is for 6pm.

Can we expect to see more shuttles slipped into the schedule? I hate to imagine sitting in an airport for 3 hrs if kiddo can’t get from the gate/luggage/to the shuttle in 10 min…

fogfog, In the past (a few years ago), the CT Limo shuttle was scheduled more frequently but not anymore. DS often needs to sit there for about an hour (for the 6:00 pm shuttle.) Sometimes he needs to sit there over 2 hours.

Sometimes, if there are multiple students waiting there and they need to wait too long, they may get together and share a tax service together. A problem is the trunk of a taxi is too small to hold the luggage of all passengers if there are too many students. So it is not ideal. I think the taxi costs slight over $100. (It used to be about $105.) If there are three who share the cost, its cost is about the same.

My son also went back today. He was flying into LGA and taking CT Limo back to campus. He also had no issues on the trip home last Sunday. If he is lucky he can catch the shuttle right when he arrives (departs about 10 minutes after arrival). If not, he will have about an hour wait for the next one and then he won’t get back to Phelps until around 11:00 PM. At least he has Sunday to relax.;)

Mine went back yesterday. He has some weird philosophical quarrel with CT Limo. I think the truth is he loves public transportation. He typically flies to LGA, takes a bus to Grand Central, and then takes a $15 train ride (Metro North line) to New Haven. The train lets him off 6 blocks from campus. At our insistence, he takes a taxi to campus.

Clarimom, I do believe our kids went back early for the same reason!

If he has a large baggage, is it a little bit inconvenient for him to take the bus? How about Metro North line? Is it crowded?

DS is quite familiar with Metro North line. He has been to NYC many times by Metro North line, but most time without a large luggage. If it is not so inconvenient to take a large luggage (the one with wheels that you often see at airport) onto the bus, he might be tempted to try that route.

I believe DS is on a CT Limo van at this moment, if the van is on schedule.

It is generally recommended not to walk from the train station to campus after dark.

He has definitely managed it with luggage, including a 50-lb. duffel and a back pack.

Yes, we draw the line at walking from the train to campus.

CT Limo picked up DS on time. After he had arrived at campus, he immediately needed to go to a restaurant for his dinner. Hopefully, he has some friends to go with.

Yay for CT Limo services!

Will we have a bus service to BDL which is run by Yale’s organization this coming Saturday? Or, will the students have no other alternative besides CTlimo this time?

Kiddo took Ct Limo this am and is at his connecting airport …
Being first yr parents we don’t know what other options there are beyound CT Limo…
wwould love if seasoned parents whose college students must fly out–can speak to the transfers issues.
Also any info about Tweed…Have wondered if flying out of Tweed to a larger airport makes any sense…
