Booklady - thanks so much for directing me to the posts. Will definitely buy it on our own.

My son just found out he got into Branford for his freshman year. Anyone know anything about this? I don’t know that much about Yale schools.

It’s the classically beautiful gothic stone residential college that you see in all the photos: Harkness Tower is in one corner. As a freshman he’ll live in Vanderbilt.

My D says that your son is very lucky, that everyone wants to get into Branford because it’s the most typically Yale looking building and has a gorgeous courtyard.

Robert Frost called Branford’s courtyard, the most beautiful in America.

Sounds like he will like it.

Branford’s the best! I can’t wait to meet your squirrely son in the fall.

You will probably get a notice about “laundry service” soon. D says don’t bother. Not that bad to use the facilities on Old Campus. Some using the service reported lost/destroyed clothes. And here’s my favorite Parent’s Weekend memory. D needed to move her laundry around on Friday evening, so we said we’d check out Battell Chapel, nearby. We wandered in and, voila, the Whiffenpoofs were in an open dress rehearsal. They ripped through several standards while D moved the sheets to the dryer. Best 20 minutes spent at Yale by far.

anybody out there want to give me the scoop on Davenport?!

My D is in Dport, she loves it. It’s a good location for her since she has WS nearby and she actually gets herself up early to use the gym in the basement. She was a transfer, so she didn’t have the experience on Old Campus, but she’s going to try to be an RA (or whatever they call it) next year for freshmen.

Got any specific questions you want me to ask her?

not really, glad to hear it’s a good location and that your D loves it!
thanks for quick reply

IMO, Dport is even prettier than Branford, but then I’m a sucker for Georgian brick architecture.

And entomom, they’re called FroCos (Freshman Counselors).

for those students who had to fly into new haven, how did you get your laptop, printer, and other hardware to new haven safely? What if you’re doing a preorientation program first and you can’t bring it with you on the plane?

Thanks Booklady, I knew there was a catchy name for them!

Just found out I’m in Berkeley. Can anyone tell me about the dorms etc?

I’m in Berkeley as well… thus far I’ve heard freshman year we are in Vanderbilt which has suites are generally very nice. But I’d like other info as well!Especially concerning soph-senior years.

oh yay Vanderbilt :D. I remember seeing those suites. I liked them a lot.

Can anyone give me info on Saybrook? I’ve been told that the freshmen housing on Old Campus (L-Dub) is extremely small (7X11 rooms) with 2 in a room on bunkbed and no room for anything else, except in the common room. Isn’t it true that L-dub had bedbugs last year?

desiw, not bedbugs. Just a few little tiny mice.

And yes, the sleeping rooms come with bunk beds, which you will barely have room to “unbunk”, a couple of dressers and that’s about it.

The common room was fairly spacious- room for four desks and chairs, a couch, coffee table, side chair, lamp, microwave stand. Don’t count on fitting exactly these items, but you get the idea. And you will be the envy of your friends at other universities- the mere existence of a common room is very rare and cherished. Enjoy!

thanks, riverrunner!
