Yale Parents thread

When I lived in L-Dub, we had one desk in each bedroom, in addition to the bunk beds and dressers. That frees up even more space in the common room. The bedrooms were cozy to say the least, but it was definitely livable - you just wouldn’t spend your free time in your bedroom. And things get a lot nicer starting sophomore year - I love living in Saybrook (and sad that as a rising senior next year will be my last)!

I guess you’ve all gotten your July 1 tuition/room&board bill. I just wanted to say how nice it is that with Yale you get a bill for tuition and room & board and no extra tacked on fees. I know that is not the case with a lot of other colleges.

I didn’t get the tuitition bill. Is it sent reg mail or email?

I got it via e-mail. Did you register for eBill-epay? If so, you should have gotten it. I don’t think Yale mails paper bills for the monthly student account.

There will be fees tacked on, but they don’t amount to a whole lot (at least not in comparison to the main costs!) On our rising senior’s statement there is a Student Activities Fee of $75 and Senior Class Dues of $110.

The student activities fee can be waived, and the senior class dues are the only tacked on fee we’ve paid to date with a rising senior and a rising sophomore. (Maybe they’re optional too, I didn’t check it out!) Anyway, I appreciate the way they handle things. There’s nothing that annoys me more than getting a bill for anything with mandatory fees/taxes/misc. charges added.

Wish I knew that last year! How do you do waive it?

I’m not a parent, but am posting for mine. They need to know what a good hotel to stay at in New Haven. Affordability and proximity to the Yale campus are most important. I figured other Yale parents would know this best. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

For proximity, the Marriott Courtyard, the Omni, and the Study. However, they are all fairly expensive. Prices go down once you get out of the immediate campus area: there’s a La Quinta Inn and a Premier Suites right off I-95. We’ve mainly stayed at the Courtyard, since it’s very convenient to D’s residential college.

entomom - go to [Student Information Systems](SIS | Banner Support) and login, then go to the main menu tab. The last item is the waiver. It turns out that you also can waive the senior class dues if you want. You can read about waiving the health plan and about what those fees are by going to the student accounts tab and clicking on important monthly billing messages.

wjb - how do you register for ebill-epay?

Here’s the page with basic information about the system and how to enroll:
[eBill-ePay - Welcome to eBill-ePay](http://www.yale.edu/sis/ebep/#)

La Quinta is not that far from campus, but the price is much lower than in the hotels closer by.

About bunkbeds in the Old Campus dorm rooms: is that true of all of them? DS is in Trumbull, which means Bingham on Old Campus.

Another question, I posted elsewhere, but thought I’d also ask here–what is the situation with practice rooms in Old Campus? DS plans to major in music (piano, violin, composition) but Trumbull doesn’t have practice rooms. His Alumni Interviewer took him to lunch and advised him to write to the powers that be requesting a residential college with practice rooms but he was too timid to do it. There is a single in his suite, but it was assigned to a different student and I don’t think there will be room to practice a violin in a room with bunkbeds.

I think the situation varies, depending on the dorm. I believe your son can use the practice rooms in Trumbull. (I’m assuming there are at least some practice rooms in every Residential College.)

Stringkeymom - I know Trumbull used to have at least one practice room, but maybe it was gone after the renovation? Anyway, maybe he could ask the DUS of Music - the email address is dus.music@yale.edu.

thanks wjb

Thanks for the link and info Yalemom2!

My parents looked at the La Quinta and decided it works well enough. Thanks again for the advice.

@mc1600: My daughter traveled from Oregon and did FOOT for preorientation. She flew out with 1 suitcase with all the things she needed for FOOT. My jusband and I followed a few days later with the rest of her things. We used Bed Bath and Beyonds PacknHold service so we bought everything other than her personal items (clothes, shoes etc). there.

Thanks–apparently there aren’t practice rooms in Old Campus. Trumbull doesn’t have practice rooms either so it looks like DS will need to run over to the music department. His Alumni Interviewer advised him to write the Residential College staff before they made the assignments to request a college with practice rooms or as close as possible to the music department, but he is timid about doing things like that and I didn’t want to do it for him. Bingham (which is freshman housing for Trumbulls) is at the farther end of OC from the music dept. but the campus isn’t that large, so hopefully he won’t find it too difficult to get to the practice rooms.
