Yale Parents thread

DS was in Durfee (and 5th floor!) in old campus during the freshman year. Being not very physical actively ourselves, it was a challenge for us to help DS move in and move out. Thankfully, we were somewhat younger back then.

To be sure, the Residential College will arrange some upper classmento help freshmen move in. (These volunteering upperclassmen are really helpful.)

At the end of the freshman year, DS’s legs were full of muscles, after he had climbed up and down stairs for two semesters (and walking up and down the science hills everyday as he was a science major.) It was good for him. Also, for the same floor, an “antique” building like Durfee is much higher than a typical modern building.

At the end of the year, the students from a wealthy family are generally not willing to spend time on cleaning up the common room and they are willing to pay the fines instead (help the local Custodial workers – a golden example a “trickle-down” economy?) But the students from the not so wealthy family are the other way around. If you belong to the latter group, do not let any of your suitemates to leave for vacation before the large furniture in the comment area have been moved out (move out = just leave it next to garbage can and discard it. Some students do throw away furniture at the end of each year, and buy something new the next year – talking about the wealth effect of Yale student’s families here!)

Agree with mcat2: freshman move-in is wonderfully coordinated by a large number of helpful undergraduates who will help deliver boxes and other items to the rooms. It goes very quickly, and we did not have any difficulty with parking–somewhat unexpectedly, given the general difficulty of parking in New Haven. (At least it seems difficult to those of us who come from the middle of nowhere.)

Sorry to change the subject, but I have some quick questions. Has anyone rented a car and driven from/to LaGuardia? How much time should we allow to drive from Yale to LaGuardia on a Thursday afternoon, leaving Yale about 4:00 pm? We’re attending a recital that doesn’t end until 3:30 pm and have a flight leaving from LaGuardia at 7:40 pm. So, things will be pretty tight. We’re looking into shuttles, but the departure times are all too early. So, now looking at the car rental possibility.

That is a very tight time frame, especially on a Friday afternoon/evening. You should just make it, if you try to leave immediately at the end of the concert (someone should probably slip out early to bring the car around). Good luck!

Not so bad on a Thursday, though? Want to have at least 5-10 min at end of concert for hugs etc–is my S’s recital :)

If you have not purchased tickets yet, you will save yourself from rush hour NYC traffic by leaving from Westchester County airport or Hartford. The car rentals from those locations are significantly cheaper to cover the likely higher flight prices.

Thanks, YaleGradandDad. Have flown Hartford before and will definitely consider each of those for future. Our airport has no direct flights to either of those airports, though, so it adds considerable travel time to change planes (and this is a quick 1 night-1day trip for us). Also, we’re using frequent flier miles, so had to fly where the airline goes this time.

Clarimom: it would take about 90 minutes to drive to LaGuardia with no traffic. It’s unpredictable how much longer it will take in rush hour, but the good news is that most of the traffic will be going in the opposite direction. Of course, you’ll hit some. Bring a GPS with traffic reports if you have one, and a good map of the NY metro area. Listen to the traffic on AM radio: 1010 has it every 10 minutes and 880 also has it every 10 minutes “on the 8’s.”. Neither station will help you in CT, though. Don’t know how long it takes to return your rental car or get through security lines, though. Good luck!

Whoops! Misread your post as Friday. It’s true that 90 minutes-2 hours should be sufficient, especially on a Thursday ;-). However, I have often sat in traffic that turned the trip into 3 hours or more. If you’re driving up from LaGuardia, you can check for construction and other potential traffic issues.

Hi All

Just returned from a nice weekend in NH. The trees are blooming in several of the parks near campus…

Ate at Pepes Sat night.

Asked our K1 about move-out issues…as a frosh the futon, TV etc will all be moved to the RC. asked about move out and what could we do–and despite asking the question in multiple ways --we were told that “they have it under control”…
soooo other than reminding K1 to NOT pack things that haven’t been drycleaned etc in boxes (to protect winter wear from moths etc…and use of mothballs) I think we won’t be needed. I gather they will enlist help or pay for help with the students/guys who will move stuff for a fee.

K1 will be on campus past move-out because varsity sport season isn’t over until after move-out–

Just a note for those who mentioned YCC providing some storage options, make sure you read the waiver carefully. It doesn’t sound like the storage is secure and will be put in a trailer that might not even be locked. Wouldn’t want to store anything valuable with them.

The waiver is probably written as broadly as possible to release YCC of any possible liability. I believe the trailers are locked, and I did not hear of any items being stolen last year. I do agree, though, that valuables should be stored elsewhere.

Somewhere I saw the storage as listed as regular vs “valuable” so I gather there may be an option depending on rc for that.
We have a policy for our student’s contents, though I don’t know if that only counts during the school year and in a dorm room etc or if in school storage counts.

On a completely random note–our student tells us the U has been paying for those port-o-lets the “occupy” squatters have been using, Ironic isn’t it, they are protesting the “man” yet the “man” is paying for them to have "a pot to ___ in. "

Not to change the topic, but I’m new to this forum (daughter newly admitted member of Class of 2016) and I need some advice about where to stay for BDD. We’re debating betwn the Courtyard by Marriott and the Omni. I know that there is a bit of a difference in pricing, but beyond that, is one better in terms of location (for accessing the BDD activities), food, and/or other amenities/services. Also, when do most families arrive for BDD and how long do they stay? Three days seems pretty long to me. Thank you.

Both are fine for BDD. Depending on where you live and when you can get in, you’ll stay for a night or two.

Do either of them have rooms for Bulldog Days at this point? Either one is fine as far as location goes.

When we decided last minute to stay overnight for freshman dropoff (because we were shut out of our beach vacation house because of Hurricane Irene) we couldn’t get into any of the hotels in New Haven, so we stayed at the Hampton in Milford. There are several hotels out on Rt. 95 and it’s really not a big deal to drive to and from. There’s a (pay) parking lot on York (and others) that you can use. Something to think about if the two you mentioned aren’t available.

Thank you for the information. As of yesterday, both hotels had rooms remaining for the BDD dates.

Congratulations by the way Maple 1 and Welcome to the Yale Parents Forum!
As the others said, either hotel is good as is the Study. Be prepared however to not see your D very much during Bull Dog Days, my daughter went by herself (we were living overseas) and said she was busy morning till night. Because I didn’t go I am not sure what they have planned for parents but I am sure you would know what there is. If they don’t have a lot for parents to do you can always explore the area!
