Yale Political Union

Can anyone tell me more about this? How big of an influence is it on campus?

Any information would be helpful, and yes, I have perused their website, but would still like to know more.

Since I am not in the YPU and only know about it through friends, I can’t tell you much. Anything I know probably can be found on the website. There are several different parties that you can join, and they have debates, etc. among the party and among the entire YPU.

To the more social aspect, you get to know everyone in your party really well, and alumns donate a lot of money to their parties, so they often host events, throw parties, etc. It lets you get to know a lot of interesting people and it’s a big organization. I know at least some of them have some initiation/secret events at some unspecified location. I really don’t know much more about it that through friends, but I’m sure someone actually in YPU can fill you in during Bulldog days =P If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

My son is in the YPU. There are indeed several parties to choose from, and furthermore, there are constant political situations that occur within the parties causing new parties and factions to form, providing as much back room politicking as one could desire. In terms of a time commitment, it is as much as you want it to be. The initiations and other nebulous activities are as rumored. As mentioned, alumni are very committed to their parties and most are very well supported. There are weekly debates within each party in addition to the YPU debates between parties. In addition, there are prize debates, guest speakers, and hosted events in NYC. I would recommend contacting the officers of the parties you are interested in for more details.

Thanks for the replies!

Do you have to commit to a party once you join or can you join and then decide which party you want to belong to?

It’s essentially a club (or really, a group of clubs) for people who are interested in politics. It doesn’t have any more “influence” on campus than other clubs.
