Yale Resume + Interview

Does Yale accept resumes? I feel like I had to leave out a lot of important details on the Common App, and a resume would really help me explain things. On another note, are interviews recommended? Do I need to get my app in by a certain time to schedule an interview? (would really prefer not to interview since my last college interview didn’t go so well)

I’m not sure about the resume. However. interviews are OPTIONAL. Whenever something is optional, especially if you are looking at top schools, it’s good if you do it. Unless you totally screw it up, it’s better than nothing since it shows your interest and effort. However, if you do really well on it, it might give you a little bit of push. It is better not interviewing than not doing well there. What makes you think that your interview didn’t go well last time?

@NJCCNJ My interviewer went about it in a way completely different from how I expected, he let me talk about what I wanted to and I wasn’t prepared for it at all, I thought he would look at my resume and ask about different things on there. I kind of jumped around talking about different things, and the things I wanted to emphasize he glossed over. And when it came to the “what do you see yourself doing in 10 years” question I gave my answer but he kept looking for more and I have no idea what he wanted. It ended on him asking me what did I want that college know in general and I said lamely I just really like learning and that’s why I want to go. My questions for him weren’t even that good. Not my best moment, I could probably improve and learn from my mistakes but would really rather not do it again

but you still got in. And if you are that nervous, i recommend not doing it. It might work against you

@NJCCNJ … I still think it’s because that college in question doesn’t value the interview very highly, and again because of my school I think they were able to overlook it. But if it’s one of those “optional but not really optional” things I might reconsider… I’ll see what I do once they contact me, maybe I’ll be more confident in my abilities in a couple weeks. thanks

First, if you are offered an interview, TAKE IT. To decline an interview would be a strong sign of disinterest in a school. That said, you do not have to actively pursue one if you do not want to, and not being offered an interview should not work against you.

Second, Yale Admissions seems to discourage sending resumes:

Google will readily yield answers to many such questions.

If I were you, I’d practice my interviewing skills. It will come in useful down the road, too.

@renaissancedad wait but when I looked it up it said Yale would contact you for an interview after you submitted an application… I didn’t think you could actively pursue one in the first place:

"The ASC will not contact you for an alumni interview until after you have submitted your admissions applications to Yale. " http://admissions.yale.edu/interviews

Thank you for the info on resumes!! sorry I missed that

Actually, I’m fine when it comes to job interviews, it’s just the college interview format that completely threw me off. Maybe I was just off that one day though (at least I hope…)

^ I don’t believe you can initiate the request for an interview right out of the gate, but if you haven’t been contracted after an appropriate amount of time you can certainly call admissions and inquire. This has been known to stimulate activity. If you prefer not to interview, and nothing happens, just don’t pursue it.

@renaissancedad OH, gotcha, that makes sense. I’m going to cross fingers they don’t contact me lol…

I wasn’t personally contacted for a yale interview but I think you can bring your resume if you do get one.

@werewolf2016 oh good to know! How long do you have to wait before you know “you haven’t been contacted”

Are you talking about an alumni interview? I interview for another Ivy. They try to get everyone an interview but it depends on the amount of applicants vs the amount of interviewers. My deadline for RD is Feb 28 so you’ve got time.

That said. Relax. I know you desperately want to get into Yale, but life will not end if you don’t, and smart, motivated kids succeed. Make sure you come prepared with questions about the interviewer’s experience at Yale. I am far more impressed with kids who have clearly looked at the website and ask questions about how specific programs/instituets,professions could impact their experience.

After that, you are at the mercy of the alumni’s preconceptions and predjudices, so above all be flexible. Good luck.

@qialah Yes, the last interview I had was with an alum. And wow, thank you so much!! It’s so great to get advice from someone who actually does the interviewing. I think that may have been another mistake I made, I tried to be clever with the questions I asked but I should have been straightforward and just asked questions about the university itself (I was afraid I’d missed something in my research and it would look bad if I asked). Again, thank you!!
