As for the essay, I am not at that stage, but my English teacher has told me that I am incredibly advanced in my writing abilities and that should, by far, be my strongest asset in my college application.

Oh, and I have also done 11 years of piano, 5 years of violin, and 3 years of drums.

Okay, last time, I am also the only high school student involved in the University of Montana Russian Club, where I have helped welcome Russian professors on cultural exchanges (I have been teaching myself Russian for the past two years and am at a degree of intermediate proficiency).

I think you have a good chance since you are from Montana.

BTW, why not SAT II tests?

please chance back!
(we’ve got a similar situation)

okay, so your classes and standardized tests are EXTRA SUPER AMAZING, yale will of course love that (with a perfect ACT score, you’ve already got about a 30% chance alone!) being a national level page (as will i be) looks great, and you should think about saying that your major is poly sci, and then changing it after you get accepted. i think that overall Yale should be a mid-low reach for you, which is about the best chance any person has at Yale! GOOD LUCK!

Hey I’ll chance you guys back too, but my word probably carries less weight as I am just as ignorant to the college chancing process as anyone. Thanks though, Yale is definitely my top choice and early action would probably mean giving up an early decision to Columbia (my second choice). Do you guys think I have the credentials to make such a move worthwhile?

If Yale is definitely your top choice, do not apply ED to Columbia.

Yale seems like a good fit-- your test scores are great and your ECs are interesting. Being from Montana is also a draw. I agree with pbr-- do not apply to Columbia if you really want to go to Yale (you may get in!)

chance me back!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1039901-chance-me-ill-chance-you-back-cookies.html

Why did you not take AP exams with most of your AP classes? Also doesn’t Yale require SAT IIs?

Okay, thanks for the feedback. I thought I’d only apply ED to Columbia if Yale seemed like a far reach, as I know that Columbia is easier (but by no means EASY) to get in to and I didn’t want to be throwing away the improved acceptance rate of ED for a crapshot at Yale SCEA. Also, I’m taking those AP exams this year so I don’t have scores for them. I am hoping for 5’s on them all because that I seem to be doing very well in all of the classes. Also, I know that there is a girl in my school who is applying to Yale SCEA too; her dad went to Yale and she spent a semester in California training horses, but her academics are not nearly as strong, I mean probably not even close to mine. Would I still have a better chance than her despite the generation thing and her horse thing?

If Yale is your unequivocal first choice, apply there and don’t worry about odds. The cards will fall how they may. My younger son had Columbia as his first choice, applied there ED, got in, and never looked back. Personally, I was rooting for Yale (although my son wisely points out that I only liked Yale because we had a cute tour guide). His counselor tried to convince him to apply to Yale EA or wait for Harvard, as his high school is allegedly “disliked” by Columbia. He didn’t listen to his counselor or me. I’m pleased with his choice, as he let his own heart drive his decision, and he is ecstatic with his Columbia experience. (And he hails from a spot in Montana’s neighborhood.)
