Yale singers attacked

Perhaps someone already posted this, I just read about it this morning. Crazy.

www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/01/10/BAGPQNG2MM1.DTL&hw=Yale+cappella+group&sn=001&sc=1000

this is a nightmare…my friend knows some of the boys that did the beating

the Yale paper has a good article as well

I am very disappointed with the handling of this case, and have voiced my concerns, along with many other San Franciscans- to the SFPD, the Mayor’s office, the Supervisor’s etc.

The rivalry between the two schools- SI and SH often is an excuse to get obnoxious, and I know of many parties where kids from one school or the other are asked to leave because of stupid boys, and yes its mostly boys, getting uppity

Many Si/SH kids are really good friends with each, often knowing each other since grammer school

These boys, well, double ick…I hope they get punished severlly for their actions

THey have hurt three schools, almost killed some college kids, and somehow aren’t getting caught.

I have read everything I can get my hands on regarding this event, as I also know one of the parents of the kids involved. I am sad for the mom, but her son’s well, they need to be held accountable.

ps- my youngest D was ten blocks away waiting for me to pick her up at the time of the ambush. And the attack took place two blocks from my in-laws house, so I am reaalllly disappointed with the police in this matter

its on tape for goodness sake

it reads like some parody in the Onion…

It is just so hard to imagine – attacking a group of singers . . .

CGM, that is admirable that you have already let city officials know what you think.

Wow. My group was heckled by a couple of ten-year-olds in Rockefeller Center when we were singing under the tree, but this is the worst audience reaction I’ve ever heard of.

My niece goes to the Urban School…I’ll have to ask her if she’s heard any scoop from her elementary-school friends.

My Ds are at SI, my friend works at SH, and to make matters even more bizarre, my Ds peditrician’s sons are the main culprits as reported…

I am still so angry, I have sent my email to all my friends and asked them to also contact the powers that be.

I have an idea that I am going to push at both schools, to curb this rivalry nonsense that escalates

We have a sports competition, and that is the main interaction between the two schools, THAT is usually peaceful, but the attitude carries over to parties, hanging out in the city, etc

I think there should be much more interaction between the schools- ie chraity programs, beach clean-ups, etc…if there was more of that, on neutral territory, it may help squelch some of this stuff that goes on

part of the problem was the “SH kids were at an SI party” - it could easily been the other way around, and that can cause tensions espeically when drink is involved, and if we can start NOW doing more to have the students embrace each other over the rivalry, everyone will be better off…

so off to work on my new mission, I figure a couple of large events a year, and a few small ones will do everyone, inclduding those the kids help a lot of good

More interaction may not necessarily be better interaction. In Philadelphia a few years ago a kid was beaten to death with baseball bats on the steps of a Catholic church because of a little Catholic high school rivalry gone bad. Though not the sort of affluent, preppy nondiocesan Catholic high schools that seem to be involved here – kids at those schools seem not to attack people that much.

The schools and the parents have a major problem, though. Apart from the fact that these kids are about to be pilloried, and that the KGO blog has the mother’s home and office phone numbers posted, something like this could not happen without a great deal of tolerance from the schools and the parents.

I am home with the flu so had an opportunity to watch TV all day:P

They interviewed the father of the girl who held the party. After the fight, the mother took pictures of the boys injuries and gave their account of the fight to the police. They showed the pictures on TV and it was quite brutal. The police have not even interviewed the victims yet! No one has been arrested despite many eyewitnesses to the attack and the father is outraged (hinted at a coverup) and CGM is right, two of the boys are the son’s of a prominent Pediatrition of all things.

These are bullies gone bad. I hope they are arrested soon.

This story literally nauseated me. I am absolutely speechless.

Rather a sweeping statement.

The highlighting in the SF Chronicle article that the culprits were GRADUATES of a certain high school is very interesting to me. I very rarely, if ever, read articles which mention which HIGH SCHOOL the culprits graduated from. I’m trying to think of the cajillions of altercations that take place in Philly, for example: I never see the high school alma maters mentioned.

San Francisco is a small town when it comes down to it…and strangeley enough, HS are mentioned

Part of the reason is the rivalry between the two schools, which is unfortunate

Part of the reason this is mentioned is the HS is a Catholic College Prep, not the most expensive, BUT I can almost guarantee you that the rest of the “people” also went to similar schools

what is really infuriating is that aften these kids were able to get out of trouble because of who the parents are, that certain behavior, ie partying in the parks, is ignored because of who the kids are, etc

I think if the police had done their job right, the issue of the schools involved may not have been such an issue, BUT because of the connections the kids have, etc., it is an issue and because they weren’t even taken in for underage drinking, not cited, nor really interviewed and the police captains well, its all moving all…if the sorry a(&*#ess had been hauled down that night, etc…with MAJOR apologies from the families involved, instead of the closing of ranks which seems to be happening, and some court dates, then people wouldn’t be so angry

but this is all over our news, the police chief is under fire and SH is getting inundated with calls

it is the culture of letting certain kids get away with stuff over the years that created this sense of entitlement, and seeing it all the time, well, I am not letting this go, along with parents from both schools involved

I have read a few articles about this…I have a S at Yale…not in this group at all…but, I have a dear friend whose son sang in the Colgate 13teeners… and it was a tremendous opportunity for him…they traveled around the US singing for Colgate alum groups all over…they have a stretch limo the the 13teeners own/use… and it is just awful to think that any group that serves as goodwill ambassadors for their school could be subject to beatings of any sort…never mind ones where jaws are broken.
The SF mayor and PD need to be reminded of their roles and responsibilities! Maybe bring in the Govinator??

So what?

It’s about who got out in front of the story first. In this case, the SFChronicle. I researched the story, and the high school angle was not reported in any other print media outlet (other than “SFist,” whatever that is). The kids are graduates; there is nothing but hearsay to go on that their FORMER high school affiliations had anything to do with the altercation. I see no connection between the former high schools of the kids involved and the professions or influence of their parents.

But that doesn’t prevent people from jumping to conclusions such as we have seen in this thread, does it?

How sad! The young man with the broken jaw and his mother were on Hannity&Colmes. It was painful to watch him try and speak.

Well not to worry; cgm said

so it won’t be long before they’re identified and arrested.

well, they have been identified, names all over the paper, witnessess, the police are being “methodical”

bunch of whoeey

Yes they’ve been identified. There were many witnesses. The four were briefly detained but not questioned or charged.

In a way I am glad the mentioned the HS’s, it brings to light an atmosphere I have been dealing with at my local park- kids partying and leaving huge messes, and the cops, well doing nothing

I have sent a note of apology to the Baker’s Dozen…and to let them know many San Franciscan’s are not going to let this slide

Not only the arrest of these jerks, but an investigation into the police handling of the matter

This won’t work. The type of people that participate in the beach clean ups and charity programs are not the same type of people that get into fights like this.
