Tonight at 8 PM, the Yale society tap season officially begins. It ends Thursday of next week (April 14). If you are on campus or visiting campus, make sure to look out on campus for the antics…

Accept or decline. What else can you say??

Can you explain how this works?

Let’s see, socieities choose 15 members of the junior class to join their ranks. Because of the exclusivity of such clubs as Bones, wolfs head, Elihu, berzelius and scroll and key, many peolple are actually approached by their wanting societies before tap day to see if the people they want are interested, so that they can hopefully, make sure that the “tapped” will accept the societies request to join.

Of these societies, many will say that bones has lost the allure of the old days, and that scroll and key is pretty much the new “leader” of the Yale campus, but that all depends on who you ask.

In short, from people screaming in the courtyards, to others running around with hoods or costumes on chasing people and yelling " accept or reject " tap day is the spectacle of all spectacles on the campus of Yale. For those not getting into societies, the fun of watching can be just enough !!!

Yeah scb is right, Bones has lost its luster. It is the only one that is dry, and the tap classes of the past few years, while definitely good folks, have not really been the class leaders they used to be.

Wolf’s Head and Scroll and Key are now widely seen as the top two. In particular this year’s Wolf’s Head tap class looks to be exceptional…

My dad and I just got back from doing the Yale/Harvard comparision once again.

One night right around sundown, we saw someone in a costume with a hood (looked kind of like the Grim Reaper meets the Wicked Witch of the West) leading a blindfolded guy out of the graveyard.

I was pretty excited when my dad made the connection with Tap Period.

Societies, especially Bones go to any lengths to get recruits, by the way, yalesociety, are you a member?

There have been people forced to climb poles, sing songs, run through the courtyards screaming, going blindfolded through the campus, and wearing costumes, such as the ones you say you saw, and yes, is is thrilling, and fun, and to tell you, a bit of a rush, even if you know you are going to be tapped.

Ok, this might seem completely random, but does anyone know what grade Rory (from Gilmore Girls) is at Yale?

Ahh, the maturity that is college…I bet the parents paying for all this are thrilled to death!!

scb, yeah I’m a senior involved in the process… It’s been fun for us and the new members as well, they are really excited. It’s good to pass it on to the new folks as you prepare to graduate.

There are over 20 societies, so a lot of the junior class is at least interviewed by at least one. There are the top 9 or 10 societies (all with tombs, I’m in one of those), another 7 or so with apartments and such, some newer ones, and some single sex ones (some of the all girls ones were founded after Yale went coed, and both of the all male ones were founded by Bones alumni upset off that it went coed, but the all male ones are now all meatheads).

Yalesociety, then I guess we are indeed soiety brothers, of sort. I will not ask you which tomb you belong to, nonetheless, good luck in your senior year. It was the best part of my college days, except of course graduation.

Ties between society brothers always exist, whether you realize it or not, and will continue after grauation, until you are an old man.

Be well !!

sorry for my spelling errors, my keyboard needs replacing. :)

i think it’s Rory’s 2nd year at Yale

All this sounds so exciting! What kind of student gets tapped by societies? And what exactly does being a member entail?

Well, it used to be the “old boys club”. Typically all men, usually white men. The socieites have largely changed the way they are recruiting people. You no longer will only find the captain of the row team, or the editor of the college paper as those who are tapped. You will find minorities, women, people whose grades are not exactly in the top 3rd of the class. Diversification has become a prime directive for many of the societies.

One can only think of the anger that struck William F. Buckley in his crusade to keep women out of the societies.

I have no problem with anyone in my or any society, regardless of race, or religion. I feel that noones identity devalues mine, so as long as the people I am with are of good character, I am good to go.

As for those who are tapped, remember, some folks don’t want in, and may sometimes, if rarely reject an invitation. In the end, most people, like me, are very pleased and enthused when tapped, and are quick to join something that, at leaat I see, is something more than just hiding in tombs going through traditional rituals. We do remember the past, but also like to keep ourselves ground to the present, and hopefully the future.

“Ahh, the maturity that is college…I bet the parents paying for all this are thrilled to death!!”

Just a quick reminder, not all parents can pay for college, especially Yale, and if they did, one can hardly think to ask their parents what they used to do during their college years. Parties, fraternities, societies, and whatever else you can come up with. They were once young too. ;)

TODAY is the DAY!

Congratulations to the Class of 2006!

Hey YCM:

I kind of had it out with a guy on the Columbia Board about secret societies. Truly ignorant as to what they are, and how they operate, and what members can and can’t say. I can only say so much to this guy. Check it out…

Good luck to those chosen for the class of 2006. Have fun, party, and stay safe but don’t forget the most important thing…Be true to yourself !!
