Welsh sounds cool though…I hope they preserve it.

I mean, there’s nothing wrong with having a common tongue…SO LONG as there are others…

America is kind of losing that today, but even now we still have native speakers of German (yes, yes, including proper Haute Deutsche and Bavarian…), French (and Creole) and plethora of other languages.

It’s our school instruction that’s crap. If you want to learn a language outside of the military/your parents, college is really the only way.

Rule Britannia? Nahhhh.

The reason the American empire has grown so strong (a recession in America means people don’t buy the newest thing all at once, and redundant jobs are replaced…as opposed to starvation across the land…) is because it exploits diversity for everything it’s worth. (which is a lot)

We’ll get our heads on straight and put Math/Language/Sciences/Foreign Policy at the head of curriculum again, eventually.

On a side note: I just found out about this awesome looking program during the summer at U Chicago for languages.

Apparently some of the teachers at that program also teach at the Department of Defense Language Institute!

What languages do you learn in school over there? We generally do French for a couple of years, though my school did French and German and introduced Spanish the same year I left otherwise I’d love to have done that too. But it makes sense for us to learn those because we’re so close to Europe.

Do you learn Spanish in school?

^ Usually Spanish/French…but we start rather late in most cases, almost never from an early age, unfortunately.

Size of school/budget of school correlate well with excellence of school

There are schools in America where you can come out perfectly fluent in Korean, and schools (like mine) where you’ll have had two years of Spanish.
Government is good for things like a water supply/bus service…not schooling…

In practice, it would make sense for Americans to learn as many languages as possible since our interests are all over the place at this point.
(personally, I’m trying for Urdu/Dari/Pashto outside of academic langauges…I just see South Asia as being particularly troublesome for the next decade or so)

(sniffle) can i be best man, mal?

I’m confused prophet. Did you post in the wrong thread or was that loud sound something going right over my head? :)

hmmmm. lol. no idea what you said either, haha.
