Yale vs. Notre Dame vs. University of Texas at Austin Decision

Hello,

I need to decide between these three schools. I don’t know what I’ll major in, but I’m definetly doing a pre-med path. I’m interested in sports, and i want to be in an environment where I can succeed academically. I’m interested in performing research and studying or performing internships abroad. Here are my pros and cons.

Yale
Pro
Awesome Academics
No Requirements
Math and Science Tutor readily available
Harvard vs. Yale Weekend
Collaborative Environment
Con
I was rejected for financial aid
It seemed you needed to be on some form of financial aid to perform research
Theres only Harvard vs. Yale Weekend in football for a sports event.
Not much of a Night life. ( It seems you are either drink a beer and eat pizza with friends or study or go to some play)
Study Abroad during summer

ND

Huge Campus with LOTS of people
Med schools of probable acceptance limited to TEXAS schools
54% acceptance rate into med school
Few Organizations that provide International Experiences
Frat oriented
I think you have to be a member of a frat to enter a frat party.

More likely, this is FAKE. Considering the deadline has passed and it seems like something looking to “bait people with,” you ought to have better things to do than this.

In my three years, I have not seen anything remotely ‘cutthroat’ in ND’s academic environment. Maybe cutthroat in interhall football (…jk), but certainly not cutthroat in academics. I just had finals, and I had a study group with friends, a review session with a prof, worked together with another friend on a project, and went to a professor’s house for dinner. Students want to get good grades, but we also are very friendly and cooperative.

I did a summer of research at Yale, and I would strongly recommend Notre Dame if you love sports!

How is it that you would know that academics at UT are easy compared to Yale and Notre Dame’s? Have you taken courses there before? If you haven’t, your opinion has no validity.

I know a guy who attends Notre Dame. He’s in their Liberal Arts school. He told me the minimum GPA to stay in good standing there is a 1.8. If that’s true, then that isn’t tough or cut-throat. At UT, if you have a lower than a 2.0, they kick you out. Also, at UT, they give out letter grades. So whether you get a 79 or a 70 in the class, it goes down as a C. No C+. No C-. I know other schools use that GPA system. UT does not. At least not when I attended there.

Also, in some colleges, like the college of communications, you must meet higher GPA requirements to stay in good standing than the standard university GPA of 2.0. UT also hires many professors from the Ivy League schools. So I fully disagree with you that academics are easy at UT.

My suggestion is that you go to UT. Notre Dame and Yale are obviously ranked higher, but UT has more resources than both those universities. Just look at UT’s library system. It is superior to anything Notre Dame has. And may of UT’s schools, such as the law school, business school, and engineering school, all rank higher than Notre Dame’s. And that is what recruiters look at - the quality of the programs.

“Notre Dame and Yale are obviously ranked higher, but UT has more resources than both those universities. Just look at UT’s library system.”
If you decide to attend UT over ND and Yale because UT has a better library then you seriously need to consider what your priorities are when you are choosing a college. what a joke. I don’t know how UT’s business school ranks higher then ND’s when ND is #1 btw. I’m not saying that UT is an inferior academic school, but these claims (which clearly show a biased hatred toward ND) are ridiculous if you base your information on “a guy” in ND’s liberal arts program.

I used the library as one example. Did you not read the entire sentence? UT has better resources than both Yale and Notre Dame.

You failed to disclose the publication that apparently has Notre Dame’s business school ranked #1. Let me do it for you - would it perhaps be BusinessWeek? If so, that is the ONLY publication that has their business school ranked anywhere near the top 20. Did you check out US News and Word Report’s most recent rankings of the undergraduate business schools? Please do and tell me where Notre Dame’s business school is ranked and where UT’s is. The Gourman Report also lists UT as a top 10 business school and not Notre Dame. In fact, all of UT’s schools - Engineering, Business, the Graduate School, and even the law school , ALL rank higher than anything Notre Dame has. Just check out the rankings for yourself.

And speaking of “what a joke” , isn’t it true that at Notre Dame, you can have a 1.8 GPA and STILL be in good standing? Do you call that high academic standards?

I beg you with all the goodness in my heart to please, PLEASE choose Yale. I say that because if I were even given the choice you were, I would choose Yale in a heartbeat.

Argue about “fit” etc as much as you’d like, Yale is in a higher academic tier than ND and UT. Yes, yes ND is wonderful and a great school with a great community, but please guys, let’s be honest. You’re paying 50,000+ for an education, for the same price you can get a top 20 or a top 3. And I know “rankings aren’t everything” and yes, I agree. The difference between Harvard and Yale may be neglible. In this case, it isn’t. Please don’t pass up an amazing opportunity like this.

See where you get in and visit. That’s the way to tell what’s right for YOU. ND brings a lot of variables to the table in addition to whether it’s T20 or 3rd. Seriously, you are going to get a good education at either school. I don’t know anything about UT. Yale and ND are vastly different in many ways. The best choice depends on what works for you. There are more than a few ND students who turned down Ivies for ND, and appear very pleased they made that choice.
