Yard sales?

I find garage sales depressing. All that junk? I know most of the time it’s just people clearing out their stuff, but it always makes me think of people who have fallen on hard times. Plus when you see how much stuff people put out, it makes me wonder how cluttered they must be in general if all that excess was there.

If something is outgrown or I don’t want it anymore, I donate it immediately. A garage sale seems like outsize effort to make a few bucks.

Haven’t read through everyone’s comments so hope my “tips” aren’t too repetitive.

Wear one of those carpenter aprons with a few pockets in front. It will help keep your clothes clean and gives you a place to put change, bills, etc., extra item stickers, pen, etc. People will sometimes want to just fling their dollar bill for their bought item at you even while you are moving around the sale.

If you have lots of little junky stuff and you don’t want to price it all individually, save yourself some time and buy a pack of bright colored (varied colors) stickers/dots. Then make a simple system. Anything with a green sticker is .25 cents, blue sticker, .50 cents, red sticker, $1 - that kind of thing. Easy for anyone working at the sale to add up.

Change is very important - especially one dollar bills and five dollar bills.

Since you mention that you have lots of kids stuff, I often make a box of “free” items so that kids can rummage through that while their parents are “shopping” - then they don’t whine and beg so much for stuff and parents spend more time buying your stuff!

Let us know how you make out!
