I was looking over my psat and I came across this questions: The odds that a complex mechanical system will ------- increase when a vital function is performed by a single component; thus, ------- is highly desirable.

(A) proliferate . . complexity
(B) operate . . magnitude
(C) endure . . symmetry
(D) falter . . concentration
(E) fail . . redundancy

^ No, it’s (E). “redundancy” appropriately contrasts with “single component.”

Ahh I see, didnt see that.

Ha, I remember this question from my freshman PSAT (IDK why). I think DH specifically mentions that the word “redundancy” is used very often in questions dealing with machines and parts. If only I knew that as a freshman.

Redundancy was also on the October 09 SAT.
