Yay for good neighbors!

So my family has two labrador retrievers. They dont’ have collars because they play-fight all the time and they always get torn off, so we finally just gave up.

Today I come home from school, and our back gate is wide open. No dogs in sight. (I’m pretty sure our gardeners left the gate open when they left.)

So my mom made some flyers and my dad and I went out and drove around. Our older dog is 9 years old, so we figured they wouldn’t go too far. Our only worry is that they wouldn’t stay together.

We get back and get the flyers, and I am literally taping the first one to a phone pole when my dad’s cell phone rings. It’s my mom, telling us that one of our neighbors has BOTH DOGS. They’re now fast asleep in our backyard (with the gate firmly shut).

Apparently the two kids that found them went knocking door to door asking if anyone had lost two dogs. My fear was that someone would find them and keep them (the female is actually a very nicely bred showable dog, and they’re both purebred labs. We don’t show them, but we are very attached to them and would have been very sad had they not been returned).

Moral of the story: neighbors still do nice things! :)

It’s great to hear good stories like this. It always makes me sad to see a dog wandering around…we always stop and check the tags and call the owners… That was very responsible of the kids who found them!

Great to hear your good doggy news! We have a similar kind neighbor story. On New Years Eve, 2 years ago, our German Shorthair got spooked by fireworks and jumped the fence. One neighbor who happened to hear us calling her was out in his car at 1:00AM helping to look for her. 10 minutes later we got a phone call. A stranger picked up our dog a mile from our house. (Good thing our phone number was on her collar.) This nice man drove our dog home.

^Equally sweet. :)

Same here, astrophysicsmom. We once saw a dog that had no tag or collar (I’m assuming it was a story similar to mine), and we tried to get him to come with us so we could look around and see if anyone was looking for a dog, but he wouldn’t come near us. We finally just assumed that either he was a stray or something had spooked him, but I always wonder what happened to him.
