Yellow Fever Vaccine Exemption for S Africa

This may sound odd, but I’ve spent half the morning trying to help my business partner, who is in this situation:

Currently in Brazil (Sao Paolo area only - not countryside, nowhere aside from hotel and business meetings), trying to get to S Africa (daughter is there for a semester, only chance to visit)

She has an immune disorder such that she is unable to get the yellow fever vaccine. Had researched and called all relevant parties ahead of time and was assured that all she needed was a note from physician certifying she cannot take vaccines. She has a note to that effect.

Gets to airport - South African Air says - we can let you on the plane but we have no assurance that on the other end S Afr will let you in without, apparently, some WHO Exemption from Vaccine Document. They may quarantine you for 6 days or send you back.

She contacts her oncologist back here in the US, he sends a letter to South African Air. I contacted another doctor of hers on her behalf and was able to get a second letter to South African Air certifying that not only is she unable to get the vax, but she was only in Sao Paolo (and current CDC map shows Sao Paolo not considered a yellow fever risk)

Apparently there is some kind of WHO Exemption from Vaccine document that should have gotten filled out - but neither of the doctors seem to know anything about it, have never heard of it (and why would they have, really - they’ve never had to certify anything beyond a letter on their stationery)

So, she’s taking her chances that she will arrive and the 2 letters from the doctors plus indicating that she’s only been in Sao Paolo (and all of her receipts will back that up) will allow her through. I’ve called embassies on her behalf, I’ve called the CDC, I’ve done everything I can do to help her, and time is running short. I think she’s going to get on the plane and take her chances. I advised her that she might want to reroute herself to Europe and then S Africa, which would be a hell of a flight, and they’d still see in her passport she’s recently been to Brazil.

Travel agency is being of no help whatsoever, and I’ve had to bug them to say - what are you going to do if she gets stranded in the J-burg airport? Who should she call?

Anyone with any knowledge or suggestions?

Passport Health is a company that does travel immunizations. They may be able to help. www dot pasporthealthusa dot com

She can get the exemption certificate at a WHO-approved vaccination center. In Sao Paulo, I’d try here: [url=<a href=“http://www.cve.saude.sp.gov.br/htm/imuni/posto_fad1.htm]POSTOS”>http://www.cve.saude.sp.gov.br/htm/imuni/posto_fad1.htm]POSTOS DE VACINA

Thanks - I just received word that they accepted the 2 doctors’ letters and let her in. I woke up just as she landed!

I got my exemption through my local Safeway pharmacy. Cost me $25 and I had it in three days. Have used it, too. There is no yellow fever in Kenya (wiped out 15 years ago); there is no yellow fever in India (wiped out 20 years ago), but to go from Kenya to India, you need a doc.

(Haven’t used the WHO doc.)

Great news PG!
