By the way, I’m asian female…unfortunately, I know that colleges adm. also take one’s ethnic bg into consideration.

Your Ec’s look good and everything, but unless you cure cancer, you will not get into an Ivy with an 1800. It just won’t happen. Get that score up and you should have a really good shot.

yea need to improve your SAT

Correction, my SAT was actually 1870…I know it is still very low. I will shoot for at least 2100 on the retake…

Any more inputs?

I think you need to get a little bit higher than 2100. With a 2100, you’ll still be average of the applicant pool, and considering you’re an Asian female, that puts you below average.

do you go to phillips exeter academy or saint pauls school?

Yale? i don’t know about Yale for you. it would be a huge reach.

Please don’t take offense with my comments. Here are the flaws in your app:

  1. 1800 SAT?
  2. MATH 2C-750? For an asian you should have at least an 800.
  3. You are chinese. Why are you taking chinese at school? it will look like you are trying to take an easy way out.
4.Your gpa? People from my school with 96’s have got rejected and i go to a competitive school too although its not boarding.
  4. You ec’s are scattered and don’t show any passion.
  5. You are getting an internship next year? Kind of late. I have had my medical internship since freshman year.

However, you can still improve. Get up your gpa a bit to show improvement, get up that sat 2 in math, write amazing essays, try and win some key club awards (distinguished key clubber and such).

Once again I was giving you an honest response and sorry if I sounded too critical.

Thanks for your honest opinions.

I understand that the SAT is ridiculously low and I will do whatever I can to improve on it.
As for the Math IIC comment, it fustrates me how the inevitably stereotypical expectation for an asian female has to be so high when it regards math scores. I’m not a math oriented student. My grades are highest in my Humanities classes (which I love the most suffice it to say), hence I will take two English classes my senior year, and yes Chinese is also one of my top classes. I feel like I might have to write an essay describing each of my classes to show why I take them in order to erase the unfortunate steoretypical and ineluctable assumptions!
I understand what you mean when you say “scattered” however. Note that I want to experience as many different things as I can in highschool. Although I may not realize what my true passions are much earlier (as in freshman year or even in middle school) compared to so many CCers here, (and plus I don’t see a problem with starting it a little late) I’ve been making efforts to show my passions in writing and astronomy for the past two years.

I agree. Those stereotypes such as asians being good at math should not exist. I understand how they can frustrate you. However, the reality is they exist despite what they are right or not and it is in your best interest to accept them and conform to them. I have also learned your essays should not describe your classes or your ec’s. Thats what resumes, transcripts and standardized test scores are for. Your essay should show you behind what an application can tell them. It should demonstarted your creativity and opinions. I advise not writing an essay on you classes.

I understand you found your passion late. That won’t hurt you in the process so don’t worry about that. However, colleges usually tend to favor students who found their calling early on and have had a passion for it. However, if you can get some activities related to writing and astronomy during the summer and during senior year, you could possibly gain that advantage back.

Hope this helped!

that is so racist to say that an Asian should have a high math score. What kind of a score should a black person have?

Josephstep,

Do not throw around the term racist. Being stereotypical and racist are completely different accusations. Think about your word choice before writing your responses so indiscriminately.

Seriously, just because someone is Asian doesn’t mean they are good at math. I am definitely Exhibit A.

As far as chances go, I think your SAT score is a little too low as well as your average. Besides that, everything looks great. Love the astronomy stuff :]

I am not racist. I am asian too and also expected to have a high score. Its a stereotype I made not a racist remark and if you want to get anywhere in this world you better get used to them and rise above them.
