Yet another gift idea thread - sister in law

Adults pick a sibling to fill a stocking for for Christmas. We’ve been doing this for many years, so there are only so many siblings (inc inlaws). This year I’m kind of stumped. Here are some things I’ve done in the past: jewelry, gloves, scarf, socks, hand lotion, gourmet food items, makeup/beauty items, kitchen-y items (utensils, etc.) fancy food items (specialty olive oils, local jams, etc.) I’m trying to come up with something different/original this year. So far I have a small succulent and a small trio of Tarte lip gloss. I’m considering adding a nice gourmet/small batch local bag of coffee. We’re all 50-somethings, don’t really NEED anything, and we’re limited to a $50 budget. Anyone have any new ideas?

Any hobbies, interests to target?

Not that I can think of, really. She doesn’t like to cook, not an outdoorsy/active type person, not part of any clubs/activities. Has been on a low carb diet for a couple of years and lost quite a bit of weight, so food gifts are questionable. Oh, she likes to read, and I’ve bought books for her in the past, but that’s always dicey since I don’t know what she’s already read. Not a traveler. Really can’t think of any other hobbies or interests!

She sounds super fun. You must all fight over who gets to sit next to her and hear her scintillating stories…

Gift card to a local book store?

@milee30 she’s actually quite fun and super social. Part of me feels like at this age, if you need or want something, you’ll get it for yourself. My own husband has a hard time buying for me, and vice versa.

Part of my gifts to people this year are eco-friendly items. Yes, I’m pushing my agenda on them. Reusable bags, produce bags, beeswax wrap, things like that. Those would fill up a stocking.

Nice soaps? Reusable mug or water bottle? Bottle of wine?

Good ideas @doschicos Our state now charges for bags, so getting her a reusable one is a good idea. Didn’t even think of wine, though I’m sipping a pinot noir as I do some online shopping

Wine takes up lots of space.

Good! Usually people who are fun have interests or interesting things they talk about - so think about what hers are. When you described her in your first post, she sounded like someone who did nothing and ate dirt. If she’s fun, she’s doing something, you just need to think about what it might be.

Movie tickets? As a reader, she might want to see the new Little Women.

If she likes white wine and lives somewhere that gets hot, the insulated wine ‘glasses’ are a game changer. I have the inexpensive Ozark Trail stainless steel ones from Walmart and they work wonderfully to keep things chilled. I also have the glass ones with the double wall and they work well and are classier, but I don’t like sipping out of them as much because the lip is a little thick. But they look nice for a gift.

I was gifted some beautiful decorative dish towels last year that I love.

A yeti cup. Or a collapsible coffee cup https://www.amazon.com/S2-CRN-Collapsible-Coffee-Reusable-Pocket/dp/B07RKL34XC/ref=sr_1_33?crid=2P22Q7BADRUKK&keywords=collapsible+coffee+cup&qid=1576720196&sprefix=Collapsible+c%2Caps%2C163&sr=8-33

I use my yeti all the time. And it can go in the dishwasher

Fancy teas, hydroflask bottle, wineglass charms, stationery. ??‍♀️

You say she likes to read. So how about a subscription to something like this
http://www.bookmarksmagazine.com/ ( this is a very reader friendly book review magazine that is a lot of fun to read, and leads to lots of good finds. Mostly best seller adjecent books )

or a little more high-brow The London Review of Books

If she were in Denver, I’d get her 2 tickets to the Monet exhibit. I wish someone would give me 2 tickets to the exhibit (and drive me there and pay for parking).

If there is something similar in your/her area, do that. Or theater tickets (which are usually more than $50) or painting class or cooking class. Maybe she doesn’t cook because she doesn’t know how? We have a murder mystery dinner theater and those are fun (food is usually not that good, so no need to worry about her diet). There is also a train mystery dinner but that costs more.

If you give tickets to anything, the stocking can be filled with trinkets for the theme - paints, a mystery novel, a wooden spoon for cooking.

I’m big on buying “ wow that’s a lot of money for that” things for people who don’t “ need” anything. The kinds of things one doesn’t buy for oneself because it’s expensive. One of these could round it out but don’t know if fit the budget
