"You are 'STILL' being considered..."

Full ride O.O plus an education at one of the best schools. That’s awesome~

I would suggest not choosing CC for 2 years if you can. If you mess up and get a C in one or two classes, your GPA can be seriously threatened and the chances of transferring into a good UC become very slim. For campuses like UCLA and UCB, the average transfer GPA is around 3.7, which is VERY difficult to obtain while in college. Remember, an A- only counts as a 3.66 rather than a 4.0 like in high school. A campus like UCI or UCSB is a bit easier with the TAG program. UCI’s minimum GPA is 3.0 while UCSB’s is 3.2. But, just like UCSD, these schools may increase their GPA’s to around 3.5 due to an increasing amount of applications and even more budget cuts.

If it’s your only option, I completely understand. But, if you were fortunate enough to be admitted, don’t take the chance of transferring just to avoid higher costs, because there is most definitely not any guarantee that you’ll be accepted again in 2 years.

TAG = Transfer Admission Guarantee which UCSD and UCI has

ryeman: Thanks I am confused by “units”… o_o how many units is a class? or does that vary? o-O & wait… so your counselors registered you in classes for your first year or did they just tell you which ones to take and then you had to register yourself? o.o

@ainstuff
ummm, at my cc, a normal general education class was 3 units. major classes such as physics or chemistry+lab are around 4 units to 5 units. fitness classes like swimming or weight training are either half a unit or 1 unit. quarter system units are scaled differently

@ ryeman very informative… ty. Also, how much are classes?

@sphinx
thanks i needed someone to say that. yeah what if i end up doing bad in college, it’s going to end up in the same situation i’m in now. so should i just settle for a cal state…?

@sphinx123
i had that opportunity to go to uc riverside, merced, and cal poly pomona, but i decided to take a shot at a CC. my reason was a shot at a better school. sure there is a risk of getting a C in a class and your GPA drops and etc., but is it worth the risk? hell yeah. the motivation to move forward and the benefits of a smaller class for getting assistance in a class really help. i dno, i definitely see your point in going to the schools that accept you, but i think the reward outweighs the risk. and worse case scenario, u can withdraw before a drop date and retake the class.

@andrew69

umm… total cost for everything was probably around $400. that’s for 4-5 classes. $400 may sound like a lot, but it’s a fraction of $45,000 for a year at a UC.

@everyone
imo, it’s sad seeing some people scared of going to a CC because of the fear of not successfully transferring. it’s a risk, but it is definetly easier than a UC, and a perfect stepping stone for moving onto a UC.
and:
semester system grades go like this:
A+,A,A- = 4.0
B+,B,B- = 3.0
C+,C,C- = 2.0
and so on.
i guess the quarter system can be a bit harder in terms of a solid GPA, but i’ve been gotten 89.9%s become a 3.0.

OMG Raina! you are back :smiley: It seems like our ■■■■■ group only congregates near midnight >_> xD

& Thank you very much ryeman :slight_smile: Good luck with the UCs you applied to :)

@sphinx: Thank you for the info too :slight_smile: I never knew about that (the A- gpa stuff) I guess we’re a bit too optimistic here :\ Well I know I am XD but I’m willing to take a leap of faith… (it’s the only realistic choice I have -_-)

Basically get the best grades possible. I don’t plan on getting Cs, but you can drop classes right? Will it hurt your chances if you drop a class or two?

UCs don’t cost $45,000 a year o_O. They cost around $30,000 - including dorming

@ Sphinx123, thanks dude. You can not remake classes if you have a c? Also my friend told me if i failing a class, i should just drop it since it wont show up in the transcript.

haha hi ainstuff. :smiley: yes it seems like our group comes together late in the night x)

Isn’t dorming at UCs $11,000-15,000?

Yeah, but that’s included already. Grand total is $30,000 a year for a UC

isn’t dropping a class you’re failing at bad? oO Wait is dropping a class = W on your transcript? I don’t know what W means oo

@ainstuff
W means withdraw. it is bad, but definitely not as bad as a F. plus if you retake the class, i believe the W goes away.

@ryeman
I don’t think it’s the worth the risk ryeman. Look at this way: If you really want to, you can transfer from a school like UCI, UCSB, or UCR into UCLA or UCB if you have a great GPA. But, say you happen to get too many B’s here and there and your GPA isn’t good enough for UCLA or UCB. Well, worst case scenario is you stay enrolled in a lower-tier UC school, which is still very prestigious. But, if you go to a CC and get denied, then you’re in a MUCH worse position.

And getting W’s on your transcript can really hurt your chances. One or two aren’t a big deal, but it definitely puts you at a disadvantage against those who have a clean record in that regard.

aren’t UC to UC transfers much harder than CC to UC transfers? UCs give CC transfers priority… o_o

So, Community colleges are evil. :(
