You Chose Stanford over...

Only 5 days left, I am sure that you have (or almost) made your decision. With a predicted 73% in yield, I am sure that lots of you are coming to Stanford. Congratulations to everyone.

Penn and U of Michigan…

Go Cardinal!

Rice, Cal, UMich, UIUC (in that order)

Go Stanford Class of 2013!

Cornell, Northwestern, Wesleyan, Tufts, other LACs

STANFORD!!!

One of my friends at my school chose Stanford over Yale.

I don’t see the value of this thread… seems kind of tasteless to me.

It will take a while for you to understand… like Stanford was tasteless to you before:-) And tasteless to you does not mean it has no value. People here probably will do what you don’t do.

^huh?

Anyways, some may find value in this thread. For those still undecided, this thread could help, especially if they further question the poster’s reasons for choosing one school over the other.

I think you’re kind of crazy, but let me clarify: I am well aware that they are different but I considered it both “valueless” and “tasteless.”

Why valueless? Students are not posting why they chose Stanford over another university, which actually has a value.

Why tasteless? These types of threads – also on facebook etc – seem to me a public opportunity for people to gloat, make themselves feel more important by putting another school down, etc. If I were a student who had not been accepted anywhere I wanted to go and saw one of these threads, I’d be quite annoyed.

I’m not so much bothered by this thread as by these types of threads as a whole. I just would like to know why we have them if they aren’t going to be used to debate the relative merits of schools.

I might choose Stanford over Yale. Still thinking though

And you are not bothered by this. This thread is not for you, but for many people who are interested in the cross-admits, those people including the people at Stanford. Every year, those threads showed up on CC. My last year’s HYPS cross-admits is the most searched on google, and it provides very useful information. Check yourself by googling “Harvard Yale Princeton Stanford”.

Well, many times there are something you may not understand, just don’t throw “tasteless” and “crazy” around. And you don’t want me to make any corrections to Yale.

I’m choosing Stanford over Yale, Duke, Rice, Pomona, Haverford, UPitt (full ride), and USD (half tuition). I wanted to go to Yale, but my parents are “forcing” (if you can even say that lol…it’s not like I’m going to cry that I’m going to Stanford haha) me to go to Stanford. They basically said “since we’re compromising with you and paying 220k for your education you’re going to compromise and go where we want you to.” I might go to Harvard though if they take me off their waitlist =D

My friend is picking Stanford over UPenn, Brown, Cal, Cornell, and Duke.

[College Hopes and Worries](2023 College Hopes & Worries Survey | The Princeton Review)

I picked Stanford over Cornell, Johns Hopkins, University of Miami, Boston University, Lafayette College, University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, University of British Columbia and Queen’s University.

Reasons:

Cornell - $0 in aid as an international student

Johns Hopkins - better financial aid award at Stanford and Stanford is warm!

University of Miami - never really had any zeal to go there. I applied for the heck of it.

Boston University - Still haven’t received their package in the mail!!! I’m probably not getting good enough aid/scholarship anyway.

Lafayette College - Stanford is ranked better in my books and I’m getting better financial aid from Stanford. I also have a friend who’s there who isn’t really enjoying it and wants to transfer.

UofT, UBC, University of Waterloo, Queen’s University - Canada is too cold and the scholarships Canadians give to internationals are almost non-existent with the exception of a few which I weren’t selected for.

usermom- interesting survey. If you read these boards you would think there is a different order in that list, but this is a self-selected group of parents and students.

a friend of mine picked stanford over princeton, columbia, dartmouth, emory (emory scholarship thingy), tulane, and berkeley.

(it was Oprah!)

I chose Stanford over USC and Chapman University. It probably sounds like a no-brainer, but it was actually a very difficult decision on my part. I absolutely love television and media, and was accepted into both USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and Chapman’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. After a bunch of circumstances, though, I chose to come to Stanford instead and am probably gonna major in Creative Writing. It was hard to walk away from USC’s Cinematic Program, but I know that I’ll be working towards it. I’ll probably reapply for the Graduate program in Screenwriting. :)

crystal- my older son had the same big decision between USC film school and Stanford 3 years ago and has never regretted attending Stanford. He decided on a more techy major but minored in creative wrting and plans to pursue a career in film, despite his unrelated (on the surface) major. I will say that he is not impressed with the film program offered by Stanford and has avoided those classes other than the ones that relate to his minor. Congratulations on your Stanford admission.

curious - Thanks for the input. Yeah, when I visited Stanford and saw the Film Studies program, I was not impressed at all. It’s more theoretical, and I’m more of a hands-on person. Still, I’m more interesting in the storytelling aspect of film, not the actual filming, so Creative Writing is a perfect place for me to start. :)
