You Get What You Pay For, Sometimes

“Housing fees tend to reflect housing quality … At some colleges, however, housing is randomly assigned and fees stay the same, whether it’s an air-conditioned single or a sweltering triple.” …

The students on the Residency Hall Association (RHA) at my school just passed a resolution this year for differentiated pricing. Makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Would still appreciate more flexibility in choosing your dorm based on what you can pay, however (ex: if I want to pay more, I should be able to get a better dorm; they should mirror how housing works in the real world).

Some colleges do not consider differently priced housing to be desirable, since that may promote SES-segregation among students. However, a college that is concerned about that should make an effort to even out the desirability of different housing options.
