You know your 'kid" finally "got it" when they did or said this....

My Ds got a bit annoyed when they were going out when i would ask the transportation plan…we live in a house where the bus to get here is not so easy, on top of a steep hill, and people get lost so I ask…and with two Ds, and transporting them different places at different times, I ask…

Anyway, one night my oldest was at party near our house (she was spending the night) Suddenly at midnight, several kids said OMG, CURFEW…we need to get home, how do I get out of here…well, no cars, buses come about every hour at that point, and getting out of neighborhood it is really easy to get lost

So a boy offered to drive them all home, leaving the party, but no one but my D had a clue how to navigate our neighborhood, so she volunteered to help get the other teens home

She calls me at 12:30am, saying, “Why didn’t these kids have a plan, they knew they had a curfew, they knew the neighborhood was difficult to get out of, I am helping them get home becuase they are my friends and I don’t want them to get in trouble, but to have no clue as to what they were going to do at midnight, what were they thinking, and they can’t call mom and dad because they told them they had a way to get home, when they didn’t grrrrrrrr…I left a fun party cause they didn’t have a plan…”

It was music to my ears…now when I ask about transport, or say, don’t count on me tonight for a ride home, dad and I are going dancing, or to a movie, or such, she unerstands why I ask, and she makes a plan…

I told her when she called, I said, gosh, gee, golly, making plans…what a concept…

It’s wonderful to have that happen! Yea for your D!!

Our D finally “got it” when she was in charge when H and I went out of town for a couple of nights and left her in charge of S1 and S2 (she is 21, and they are 19 and 16). She called us the 2nd day, complaining that S1 had not left a note as to where he had gone, and didn’t he realize that she would be worried?? She said she completely understood why we have always asked them to check in as to where they are, when they’re on their way home, or if they are going somewhere else!! Now the shoe was on the other foot, and she “got it”!

We aren’t always the “overreacting parents”!

Wow I wish you two were my parents!
