You play admissions officer

You have one spot left in UCB and two very qualified applicants.

Student 1.

Maintained 4.0 GPA.
Lots of hours of Volunteer work and president of school club.
Part time job.
Essay is pretty much the run of the mill.
IGETC and Pre-Reqs done by end of Spring 2010.

Student 2.

Struggled at first at CCC.
Turned it around and accomplished a 3.8 GPA after retaking classes.
Lots of W’s.
Loads of work experience and leadership.
Essay is fantastic and really highlighted the academic growth of the student.
IGETC done by end of Spring 2010 and Pre-Reqs done in Fall 2009.

Which one gets in?

I still feel that Student 1 would get in over student 2.

I think student A is more than qualified for UCB. 4.0 GPA and president of a club makes you quite a unique applicant.

I don’t think you should be punished for working hard from start to end of community college.

That said, if Student B has a good reason for his low grades, he would probably be admitted too imo.

Both are in. If I had to pick one it would be student a.

I’d pick student one because he’s probably smarter.

Student 1 should not be punished just because he got off to a good start. That being said, they both should probably be admitted.

I would say student 1.

At first it was almost a close choice, but when I read student 2 retook many class, I found that as a turn off ( especially since all the course work was placed in front of them before, this calls for a triple A grade).

If student 2 didn’t retake classes ( I don’t know what W mean), maybe student 2 at a better chance, since student 1 has likely gotten admitted to various school, while student 2 have not. Though if student 1 expresses the desire to attend UCB more, then still student 1.

How can you gauge how much a student wants to go to UCB?

^This, and why would you punish student A because he might get into better schools? Both students would get into the mid-tiers + UCSD so student B will definitely have some place to go if rejected by Cal/UCLA.

Student #2

I think student 1 would get in. And lol, we both have the same username- trust me, I didn’t do that on purpose …

I’m not gonna lie; I would say Student 2. Frankly, these UC Personal Statement workshops are around for a reason. I believe that a fantastic (10/10) truly passionate, inspirational essay with a 3.8 would get in over a 4.0 with ok essays.

Student two. The upward trend means a lot. And the pre-reqs finished early is good too. The essay would back up the still stellar 3.8.

Seriously though, the “you play admissions officer” title makes me feel powerful.

Student 2

it seems that coming back from behind always adds character.

lol I’m student 2 in this one…

Horrible first semester accompanied by a stellar trend since then.

student 1. while an upward trend means something, i dont think it means more than straight aces from the get-go. thats the determining factor.

both will have prereqs and IGETC done by the time UCB told them to get it done. both have some pretty good extras.

essays, while important, are not important enough to offset .2 of a GPA.

their majors impacted or what?

Student 2, all day!

neither, that spot is left for me

I’d reject them both, post their pictures and personal information online and make them feel shamed of their pitiful attempts at life.
