Young Grad Asks Career Advice

Quick Q: I’m applying for PT work but, see some interesting FT posts. Now I’ve applied to a few grad programs too.

3 tacks - any advice?

A) Should I pursue PT work until hearing back in March/April?

B)Or, should I apply to FT jobs mentioning the grad possibility?

C) Or, just apply for these FT jobs and see what happens keeping my mouth shut till hearing back?

Thanks

My advise is that you apply for each position (PT or FT) with focus and passion – as though it was the only position of interest. If in fact the position doesn’t interest you, don’t pursue it once you recognize that that’s the case.

You’re not obliged to explain to the interviewer that you’re exploring multiple options. He would expect you to be doing that. Nor are you obliged to let the interviewer know where else you’re applying. Interviewers may however ask. The right reply is to redirect the question to the job/interview at hand, and re-state your interest in the position.

A and C. Get whatever job you can, it’s ugly out there. The truth is, you really don’t know if you’ll be going to grad school yet, so it is not disengenous to not reveal everything. Perhaps if the job was good enough, you might delay it? I would say that very few people are going to hire you for a full time job, if they thought you’d be out the door soon. It would be different if you knew for sure what your plans were.

I agree with fogcity.
