YoungArts application

That’s odd because if we log back onto my daughter’s submission page, we can see her uploaded video (in one discipline) and her uploaded PDF file (in the other.) The “submit” button is gone, though. And she got email confirmations. Oh well-- que sera, sera! At least we tried.

Oh, that is interesting. I am going to try that. Possibly it was processing so we couldn’t see it yet. Will let you know…

My husband has been on the phone with them often over the past couple of weeks. They said that they’ve had a LOT of submissions and that this new system has had a number of bumps. In addition to the extended deadline, they also suggested that he FedEx DVD’s/CD’s. You may want to confirm this, however, for your specific situation.

OK, just tried it, and I was able to view the submissions by going through the upload link YA sent in an e-mail. Thanks OCMusicMom, that YA suggested sending DVD/CD’s doesn’t exactly inspire confidence though…and I guess changing the age limit increased submissions a lot on top of the kinks in the new online system. I may call and see if they suggest that in our situation. Thanks for the info…

Ya know, I think we’re just going to cross fingers and assume that everything was submitted properly. When we log back in to submission page, we can see the videos, but there is no “submit” key. And we got a confirmation. I think that’s all I’m willing to do.

Is it wrong that the whole age limit thing really annoys me? I spoke to a rep who said “Well, the colleges asked us to broaden the age requirement because there are so many talented younger students.” Those talented 15 year olds will still be talented when they get to their senior year! I guess I’m just annoyed that I’ve been following this program throughout high school, waiting for my senior year so I could apply, and then they expand the application pool the very year it’s my turn. Grr! I think I’ve uploaded. I’ll wait for my confirmation email now. Good luck to everyone!

My D applied last week. Her voice teacher submitted her audition materials for both categories she has applied to; submitted Popular Voice on Tuesday, Oct 16, and Classical Voice on Thursday, Oct. 18. We received email confirmation for Pop Voice just a few hours after submitting the audition. The email for Classical had not arrived as of this morning - I called YoungArts. I explained that we had submitted the materials and everything appeared to have gone through (although there was no notification at the time of submission to indicate it was successful - or not!). I also told them we did not see any tabs to view her auditions beside the upload links. I was told this was normal and to be expected and that the second email confirmation (for classical) would arrive within the next 24-48 hours.
We did in fact receive the second email confirmation just a few minutes ago, so I am feeling a bit more confident that we had a successful upload and everything is good to go. Now we wait!

VoiceTeacherMom, wow, that is a hands-on teacher, to submit your daughters tracks for her.

Imthinking, I don’t think you’re the only person thinking along these lines.

One of the hardest things about these kinds of competitions is knowing that they are neither a true meritocracy nor a science. All artists should spend some time on adjudication panels themselves to get an idea of the myriad unseen factors and pressures that come from administrating a competition. Those who progress will be of high caliber, yes, but not progressing does not mean a lot. Applicants fall through the cracks for all kinds of reasons, ranging from computer or clerical snafus, to technical issues, to spoken or unspoken pressure to recognize under-represented demographics. And that’s not even taking into account cronyism or differences in aesthetics and taste.

This summer, D4 had an opportunity to serve on a pre-finals committee for a competition she had won the year before. Being a part of a panel (and as the youngest, she spoke less and listened more) was utterly eye-opening for her, and will serve her psychologically as she continues to enter future competitions.

glassharmonica, very true! Although, it is not necessarily typical of him to be quite so hands-on. He is a YoungArts alumnus - a voice finalist and the winner for classical. This was his “baby” so to speak. D was responsible for completing and submitting all materials including the application as well as the submission sheet for her audition pieces. He simply used our forwarded emails from YoungArts to upload the recordings.

Dannyos, it appears we experienced the same issue, although I do not know that multiple attempts to upload were made. I would highly recommend calling YoungArts. They will most likely be able to ease your fear, or at least help you if you are, indeed, having issues with uploading. Their call volume is obviously high, and there is no “waiting to speak to someone” so most likely you will have to continue calling until you are able to get through. This was my experience when calling this AM.

Going through the same thing here, their system is obviously overwhelmed. We called to confirm the files got there several days ago, they said they would call back and as of yesterday afternoon hadn’t. I would def make sure it was out there,be sad to miss out because you thought it was there and it wasn’t.

I haven’t received my email, but when I logged out and logged back in to the video upload page, I had a “Congratulations, your materials have been submitted” message in green. So I think I’m good! The message said I’d receive confirmation in 24 hours.

One of the important thing for this YOUNGARTS is the chance to be Presidential Scholar. However, only senior will be considered for Presidential scholar. If I am younger than senior, I will wait when I become Senior even though they told they will review file at the year when I become a senior. Don’t you think so?

I can’t wait for thanksgiving. I’m so nervous/excited!

Is Thanksgiving when the Finalists are notified?

It’s traditionally somewhere around that time becuase they need time to finalize ticket information.

My S got in!
He received a call and email today.
I hope you have good news, too.

My S received a phone call from Young Arts yesterday, but he wasn’t home at the time. He tried calling back today, but just played telephone tag. We are assuming (hoping) that he is a finalist since we heard that all the finalists were contacted yesterday. But he hasn’t received an email - that would be nice. Classical voice, btw.

Congrats! My S was a YA Finalist last year and it was an amazing experience!

i’m a finalist for writing! so that’s exciting. i’ve heard news from every art area except instrumental.
