I know that most people on this forum have an idea of what field or interest they want to major/minor in. However, for those people who have made this concrete decision, what are some of your alternatives if for instance, things didn’t work out with that selection: I.E. The economy remained weak for 30 years rendering a typical business degree not that valuable or technological advances became so extreme that there would be no point getting a computer science degree; or the workload was just too difficult for you to do etc.

What would you do?

I major in Business Administration/an option in Business Law.

And I guess I would consider Criminal Justice or Communications.

if math doesn’t work out i want to be a psychologist or a high school teacher. or i could drop out and get certified as a system administrator. these are jobs i’d actually be more passionate about. but i’m better at math than any of those jobs so yea…if math doesn’t work out i don’t know what will

If I suddenly lose my interest in English/Education I could see myself majoring in ceramics and/or basket weaving.

Seriously though, my tertiary area of study is Anthropology. I could almost see it as my major, but needing a PhD in the field to do just about anything kills my ambitions.

My major right now is actuarial math. I have a lot of free credits, so my minor I have decided to keep open and choose on a whim. My ideas: statistics, urban planning, economics (probably not), or something really random like asian studies.

Right now, I’m going with a major in Communication because it’s so broad. My alternative would be psychology, but psychology is way too popular! =O

I plan to major in international relations and possibly a minor in economics. Though I also debate on political science and possibly a minor in economics. If I have to switch it completely all around, I would do economics major and minor in international relations or political science. Like a poster mention above, basically staying within social sciences besides economics.

I’m majoring in Russian with a minor in middle eastern studies (possibly arabic). At this point in time I am not willing to switch my major anymore since I wont graduate in 4 years if I do which equals an extra year of tuition. So I guess I dont have a back up.

If I go to grad school I will pursue a different field, most likely arabic, however there are only three colleges in the US that offer graduate studies in arabic. =[

True, but usually Arabic is just a language combined with another major, and here are a lot of graduate level Arabic courses. Also… what an awesome opportunity to study abroad.

I am majoring in Kinesiology Pre-Health Professions. Right now it’s too late to turn back, but Psychology is my alternative if all goes to hell next year when taking chemistry and anatomy & physiology.

Originally, I was an occupational therapy major, but I just transferred into mechanical engineering. If that doesn’t work out, I’ll try comp sci. If that doesn’t work out, I think I’m going to drop out, and become a truck driver.

How do you choose what you want to do with the rest of your life if you could do pretty much anything if you put your mind to it?
