Your best beauty tip ,home made or low cost ?

^^^^^ It would be fun to experiment with the new versions of false eyelashes! Back in the day, I used them for work, but they were a bit unwieldy.

My dermatologist recommended Lac-Hydrin Five for my flaky, dry skin. It is available in most drugstores, but you have to look on the bottom shelf to find it! It is amazing. I have been using it for about 5-6 years and my legs are so much better. I use an Aveeno scrub in the shower and the Lac-Hydrin immediately after I towel off and I no longer have crocodile legs!

To keep my feet from getting those unsightly cracks, I swear by Burt’s Bee’s Peppermint foot lotion.

Soooo… I decided to try the honey thing. I got the little bear-shaped squeeze bottle which has about an inch of honey down by his feet. But, it seems to be a bit too firm (not moving when I tilted it upside down) so I zapped it for about 20-25 seconds in the microwave. Carried it upstairs by his little bear head. After shampooing my hair I decided to put a little honey in my hand-- it was waaay hot!! So I spontaneously shake my hand to get it off my fingers and sliced my index finger nail (down through the nail to the nail bed) on the razor I was holding in my other hand. Then I go to put the honey bear down and discover that the bottom of the container is no longer completely flat and it falls over. So now my fingers are all red, the bear falls over, my index finger is sliced and bandaged and I didnt get much honey wehre it was supposed to go. Epic fail. But, I did put my rings in the jewelry cleaner during all this chaos, and they look sparkly on my wrinkly ol’ bandaged and red hands :)

Daily fish oil supplements for shiny, healthy hair.

jym, you remind me of Winnie the Pooh! Who knew a little honey could get you in so much trouble?~

Hope you used some on the cut and even on the hands. Sticky, sweet, but should soothe you.
(Try the Manuka - it has the special antibacterial properties. You can order it on-line. It is a good first aid treatment to have on hand, as well.)

I had Lac-Hydrin years ago, when it was an Rx- (thanks for the reminder.) Will look for it at the drug store. It was awesome. After a few years of work stress and long hours, it returned the natural rosy to my cheeks.

I have oily hair, so here’s my tip…

When hair is fresh and CLEAN, sprinkle some baby powder in your hands and go thru the roots especially the back/neck area. Redo the next morning. This delays hair from looking oily for a much longer time. This is a life-saver on trips because washing/styling hair is a pain then. Also…put a little baby powder on your neck at night…keeps hair from getting those oils.

This also makes hair seem fuller and thicker!! :)

Some do this once their hair is oily, but that is too late for best effectiveness.

I like coconut oil as a moisturizer. It comes in a jar and is solid at room temperature. You just scoop out a little and put it in your hand and it immediately softens to liquid form. It is absorbed in the skin quickly and smells lovely.

I also use it now for shaving my legs after my shower. That way, I can wear my glasses and see what I’m doing! I just glob a bunch on, shave, rinse, pat dry.

Great Thread!

Burt’s Bees Repair Serum. It is a light rose hip seed oil. I use this as a moisturizer/soother once or twice a week instead of my normal stuff. The kids have used it for acne, burns and other skin irritations. It does smell a bit like the 60"s.

I also take a high quality Milk Thistle product every day. It is a liver support/cleanser herb, very safe with no known side effects. (at high concentrations it is used in Europe for mushroom poisonings). I notice a huge effect on the clarity of my skin. Oh, and when I was pregnant and um…the ‘trains’ were no longer moving…this solved the problem.

Very intrigued by Lac-Hydrin. Will look for that.

Jym - so sorry about the honey debacle! I get the great big plastic bottle from Costco. Actually, it’s more of a bottle cap than a squeeze cap. I dropped it once in the shower on my toe and that smarted. Am noticing as I get older I am more bothered by owies.

LOL performersmom! Winnie the pooh is about right!
Seems to me I had been given a RX for lac-hydrin once. Wonder where it ended up?? I am not too good at skincare.

I don’t think you need an Rx anymore. I find it with all the other moisturizers, but as I said it is always on the bottom shelf, tucked away from the brands with advertising campaigns.

Jym626 - I am so happy you tried the honey first!!! I was really not sure how to go about the whole thing and so now I have picked up a few tips from you on what NOT to do!!

glad the cut with the razor wasn’t any worse. The EMT’s would have had a blast with the story of the woman in the shower with a razor and a honey bear!

OMG worknprogress2! I almost sprayed my computer!

WNP – you have a talent with words. Have you considered writing a humor column or blog?

*Anyone use false eyelashes? I’m curious about them since I have not been blessed in that area but wonder if they look obvious.
*

I wear them for special occasions but I follow the tip from “What not to wear”…snip them in half or so, then apply to the outer areas of your eyes. And don’t buy the bushy ones…just the lighter more natural looking ones.

Avoid the sun as much as you can. However, I’m concerned about the constant use of sunscreen. I’m not convinced that too much use won’t cause some other problem. We are now slathering it on babies and so on. I wonder if at some point we’re going to find out that 30+ years of using daily (or near daily) sunscreen causes some other issue.

also, I’ve noticed that even people who use sunscreen frequently still end up getting age spots…so another reason to avoid the sun.

Another tip …if you use a hand raiser to shave legs in the shower or bath. You know when you first get in you get “goose bumps”…well, I find if I shave my legs right then, I get a closer shave.

And I love that inexpensive face powder by Physicians Formula (the one with all the colors). It the “highlighter” color. You sweep that across your face and it evens out your skin tone. I know a few men who use it too because it doesn’t look like makeup!

[Physicians Formula: Powder Palette® Multi-Colored Face Powder](http://www.physiciansformula.com/en-us/productdetail/face/pressed-powder/01441.html)

It’s not the bronzer color that first comes up…it’s the “highlighter” option from the drop down menu.

I don’t use the brush it comes with…I use a fat kabuki brush because it’s much faster. And, you don’t have to be perfect with applying. For just daily wear a quick brush around the face is all you need. If you were to do half your face and compare, you’d see a considerable difference.

mom2collegekids,

Thanks for the tip on the baby powder - I always wait until it’s oily (I only wash my hair every other day), never occurred to me to put in on before my hair gets a little oily. Will try that tonight.

My derm told me this - use a mineral oil based moisturizer (Vaseline Intensive Care Bath oil is a good one) and put in all over your body after you shower before drying. In fact, I air-dry after applying it. When I do this my skin stays very hydrated.

Speaking of shaving…a tip I picked up a few years ago that I wished I had known years earlier: when you shave your bikini line, go from top to bottom in the direction of the hair. It is just as close a shave and it truly prevents that horrible razor rash. The hours of suffering that I could have prevented had I known earlier!

Really, Jym?! We would never have known that ! Lol.

Another vote for the Lac-Hydrin…I started using it when it was RX only and still love it…find it on the bottom shelf at Walgreens now…just be warned if you have any cuts it does sting…thats the lactic acid in it…but that same ingredient really makes your skin soft and hydrated! Also love urea cream (rx and at lower concentrations OTC) for rough feet…and my new love…Latisse! Wow that stuff really works after about two months of use! I can’t count the number of women who have come up and asked me where I got my eyelash extensions applied!!! I just laugh and tell them I grew these myself!!

I don’t wear make-up, so I don’t have any tips there, but I have a great one for hair. Buy a big jug of cheap white vinegar. It makes a terrific hair rinse, and your hair will feel soft and will shine. It’s also good for itchy scalp or dandruff. :)Downside is that you will smell like a salad. :(

Katie93,
How expensive is Latisse?
