You might enjoy this book if you are a non-musician with a kid who is involved with music performance. http://www.amazon.com/This-Your-Brain-Music-Obsession/dp/0525949690
This book explains music theory and appeal from a neuroscience perspective. It is a very easy read but answered a lot of my questions about music and my daughters interests and behavior.

WONDERFUL! I just ordered a copy for my music loving son. Thanks!

I just put a hold on it at the county library. I noticed there were 40+ holds on 13 copies, so it must be quite a popular book.

weird, i started reading this book a little while ago. im about half way through and its pretty good so far. at some points it gets a little hard to follow with all of the scientific talk about parts of the brain and how the brain works. but it also has many many interesting facts and studies about music.

deffinetely a good read for any musician or brain scientist that like music

hey- one of the profs at school here (McGill) wrote it, he’s one of the best profs I’ve had!

Is the book readable for a high school student (very musical one ;-))?

I think the book would be good for a high school student, especially for a kid who loves music and also has an interest in science. The author explains music terms and music theory from a basic level and uses well-known, popular music as examples. For someone who has more than a basic knowledge of music theory, this might be too basic and superficial. The book focuses on how the brain processes music and basic theories of neuroscience. The author avoids scientific jargon and does a great job of using easy to understand examples and analogies to explain some vague and difficult to understand neuroscience concepts and theories.

You can listen to the author being interviewed by radio talk show host Dennis Prager at http://www.townhall.com/TalkRadio/Show.aspx?ContentGuid=904a1691-35a9-46d0-9be0-e4fd98f5f5cb&RadioShowId=3
