Your favorite biblical/religious verse

Hi, I’m not religious but I just love hearing little lines and verses from the bible since they’re so poetic but since I’m unfamiliar with the bible (or any religious text for that matter), can you please list some and where they came from. Much appreciated!

[BibleGateway.com - PassageLookup: Ecclesiastes 3](<a href=“Ecclesiastes 3 KJV;BibleGatewaycom - To every thing there is a season, and a - Bible Gateway”>Ecclesiastes 3 KJV - To every thing there is a season, and a - Bible Gateway)

Ecclesiastes 3
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Philippians 4:8 (KJV) Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Go, now, attack Amalek, and deal with him and all that he has under the ban. Do not spare him, but kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and asses.'"

He and his troops spared Agag and the best of the fat sheep and oxen, and the lambs. They refused to carry out the doom on anything that was worthwhile, dooming only what was worthless and of no account.

1 Samuel 15 - 3,7

From this I learned that there were better books of pretty phrases. And truer ones, too.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime; give a man religion and he will die praying for a fish. – Anonymous

1-John 11:35 Jesus wept. (Jeopardy question for shortest sentence in the Bible.)

2- Romans 8:28…paraphrased as Everything works out for the best!. My Mom told me when I’d broken up with long term HS boyfriend and I thought my life was over (“she’s old and just doesn’t understand!”)…of course when I’d met future husband, dang if she wasn’t right!

3- 1 Corinthians 13:4 (see 1tgmom above)…we used this in our wedding 25 years ago (OMG!)…ending with "but the greatest of these is Love…

4-and sorry, this may also belong under the thread of “Rare & Special Treats with Warm Memories”, but many favored and fond memories come from the book of Luke at Christmas time…will always remember (and miss!) sipping hot chocolate by the fire with Granny reading the Christmas story to me, siblings, cousins…

2 Kings 2:23-25

23
From there Elisha went up to Bethel. While he was on the way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him. “Go up, baldhead,” they shouted, “go up, baldhead!”

24
The prophet turned and saw them, and he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two she-bears came out of the woods and tore forty-two of the children to pieces.

25
From there he went to Mount Carmel, and thence he returned to Samaria.

“For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord; plans for good and not evil; plans for a future and a hope”. Jeremiah 29:11 He pops this verse up so many times just to let me know He is leading my life and that He has an amazing life waiting for me. All I need to do is to follow His owner’s manual for an amazing, adventurous, and guilt-free life–the Bible (I love the New International Bible-can’t handle those thees and thous. Sorry King James, bud). I love trying to live for Jesus because His life is so pure, loving, and with eternal purpose.

I HATE religion too. But having a personal relationship with Jesus is amazing. This does not mean I am against church, just any form of religious attitude. I also hate Christians that are hypocrites, including when I am. But, my focus is supposed to be on Jesus alone and to love heaven into all us hypocrites!

Ephesians 6:10-20 (New International Version)

The Armor of God
10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

19Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Psalm 139:13-18 (New International Version)

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

17 How precious to [a] me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!

18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
When I awake,
I am still with you.

Of course, that verse from Philippians 4 is the source of Northwestern University’s motto:
Quaecumquae Sunt Vera (Whatsoever things are true…), a most fitting motto for a university. See it here:
<a href=“Charles Deering McCormick Library: Libraries - Northwestern University”>Charles Deering McCormick Library: Libraries - Northwestern University;

You beat me to it, zapfino! I think it’s a very fitting
motto for NU and while I’m no Bible quote aficionado, I love this one.

Thanks for the info about Northwestern - I didn’t know that. Those were verses read to us at every Monday morning assembly by the headmistress at my (secular) private school, way back in the day.
