Your Favorite Hot Pepper

This weekend I’ll be planting chili pepper seeds for this year’s container garden. Planning to go with Hungarian, Serrano, Jalapeno and Thai Bird. Thought about searching for the Trinidad Scorpion, allegedly the world’s hottest chili, but I nearly choked from the heat from last year’s crop of Hungarians, so no need for anything spicier this year.

What’s your take on chili peppers?

It’s not that hot, but my favorite pepper is the Shishito - hands down!

Love them all! Usually plant what grows best in my space–Jalapenos and Hungarian Wax. Habaneros do well too, but I end up with more than I can use. I pickled hot peppers last year and they were a big hit with friends–gave a bunch away. I used the four-ounce wide mouth Ball jars.

Jalapeños are very versatile to me- great raw, good cooked. Not too hot when seeded, but can pack heat when seeds are kept.

Overall I find peppers one of the easiest vegetables to grow.

Last year I planted Pretty Purple Pepper, which is both pretty and prolific, as well as hot. It grew like mad and ripened even in my relatively cold garden. Great addition to soups (pureed with some broth).

Poblano are my favorite to eat. I’ve never had much luck with growing any of them.
