More of a drama with a some funny lines and characters : Sense and Sensibility (with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant). I am not a huge fan of romances in general, but I have this one memorized.
Anyone mention Bringing Up Baby? I love/hate how annoying Katharine Hepburn’s character is in this movie!
Haven’t seen anyone mention:
Definitely Maybe
or for that matter:
Deadpool
which has lots of rom-com moments. The line about Deadpool looking like an avocado was brilliant. Ryan Reynolds has great comedic timing, IMO.
Crazy, Stupid Love
Sense and Sensability was never my favorite Austen book, but I thought the movie did a wonderful job of making “Sensibility” not so incredibly irritating. And of course great cast!
What a Girl Wants. D and I must have watched this 100 times through the years.
While You Were Sleeping. Love Actually
No one has mentioned Groundhog Day, which is largely a romantic comedy and also a great movie.
Also, I remember really liking the Drew Barrymore Cinderella movie. Ever After?
.Post 28.
Quite a few of the movies mentioned are rom but not really com, rather romantic movies with some funny lines as opposed to comedy being a major aspect. I don’t think I’d ever define Jane Austen as rom-com, for example.
Ever After - I would not call it a comedy, but it is an awesome movie.
^ Ah, C’mon. You guys are way too critical. When Drew carried the prince on her back, that was really funny.
Yes, it does have a few funnny moments and a happy end, and it is one of the movies we ended up buying on DVD. But the overall vibe of the movie is not a comedy - the movie review sites call it a “romantic drama.”
Lovers and Other Strangers, Love With the Proper Stranger. Similar titles but very different movies.
Love with the Proper Stranger…I remember really liking that movie! It was pretty daring for 1963.
I used to love all of those “3 girls find romance” movies, like How to Marry a Millionaire, and Three Coins in the Fountain.
The reminds me of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which has to be one of the greats. A favorite moment: one guy aks another, gazing awestruck at Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell, “If the ship were sinking, which of those girls would you save?” Second guy replies, dazed, “Those girls wouldn’t sink.” =))
I grew up in the NYC TV market, and watched enormous numbers of wonderful old movies, before they were all bought up by TNT and the like. There were around 7 per day. A great education in film.
We had a black and white tv, and although many of those movies were B&W, some weren’t. I never knew that Rear Window, for example, was in color, until I saw Grace Kelly’s brilliant emerald green nightgown many years later in a college theater.
@Consolation, I also grew up in NYC. I watched all those movies on the 4:00 Movie or The Late Show ( movie that came on at 11:30 PM.) I would trade all my cable movie channels for one that would show the kinds of movies those two programs did.
What about TCM?–just saw Rear Window yesterday. And How to Marry a Millionaire last week. (H and I are TCM addicts.)
More comedy than romance (but classified as both on IMDb): Meet the Parents.
Another oldie but goodie is The Goodbye Girl
Crazy Stupid Love. The scene where Emma Stone is embarrassed by her body because Ryan Gosling is so unbelievable looking is one of my all time favorites and I love the surprise twist that centers the whole movie…it’s adorable.
DH and D were out of town for the day and I stayed home to do some work and have some alone time.
Lo and behold, You’ve Got Mail, The Proposal and The Holiday were on. I love it when things work out that way.
Did you get any work done.
Just last night if you wanted to get away from the hurricane coverage you could watch either Notting Hill or You’ve Got Mail on two different cable stations, always seem to be on television somewhere. Glad someone mentioned While You Were Sleeping. What about 27 Dresses? That is silly but fun, not in a class like either Sleepless in Seattle or When Harry Met Sally.
There is another one that I enjoy although not on TV all that much with George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer and taking turns with each others kids, very cute but cannot think of the name.
