Your Good Buy Of The Day (Part 1)

An FYI, a Wiley Plus access code can be used FOR ANY WILEY TEXT. You can buy Wiley Plus Access codes on Ebay and Half.com. It does not matter if you bought a textbook that came with Wiley Plus and never used it, and the next semester you need a Wiley Plus access. When you go online and sign up, you just need the code and can link it to any text or class. So if you find a Wiley text used cheap, you can get the Wiley Plus for $35ish on eBay or Half. You can only use it once. But if you have a green unused Wiley Plus card with code, your good.

sunnyflorida- This may be just the information I’m looking for! The book in question is a Wiley published Physics Book. The professor said he is using the 8th edition. He also mentioned that his colleague asked him to package it with a 3 semester online homework license. The ISBN number he sent my son doesn’t generate anything on Google, (the school bookstore still doesn’t have anything listed!) so I suspect it is the package with the book and the homework license.

Are you saying that I might possibly be able to buy a used copy of the book and then purchase the homework license separately via Wiley Plus?? (If so, I’m wondering what constitutes a 3-semester license.)That would be wonderful as I could possibly save a lot of money that way.

Thanks so much!

Debruns and northeastmom - Thanks for the info about bundled books (I guess a chemistry book and a lab manual would be an example?) I was thinking that is referred to an online access code, which if not sold separately, forces students to buy brand-new books each semester, as was the case with my son’s computer science class.

Mom2M - Thanks for the suggestion. Just checked Wiley and learned that the WileyPlus code would be $95. It seemed to indicate you choose a code specific to a book. I’ll have to price everything (if the book store publishes the ISBN and prices before classes start in two weeks!) to see what would be least expensive.

The bookstores/school has to have the ISBN number, it’s what they order the books with and it’s usually on the book many times, maybe someone in the bookstore can help.

Wiley codes are NOT BOOK SPECIFIC. And I pay an average of $35-40 for a WILEY PLUS code on eBay or Half.com. They come in these green cardboard envelope thingies, and they are not book specific.

I do not know how long a typical Wiley code is good for once you assign it to a specific book. I thought it was one semester. I am not familiar with one that gives a 3 semester access for Wiley. Here is where it gets complicated. The book may be Wiley but the computer access may not be a Wiley program. There are others. The prof may use a Wiley text and a totally different computer access program for labs or homework or quizes. Sometimes it is better to just buy the package at the bookstore. A 3 semester access will always be a better deal than buying 3 separate ones.

And if you scan for an ISBN of a package, you likely will not find it online. That is how they get around the law. They make up a package of things specific to that school, with each element having an ISBN number, but getting the individual numbers for what is in the package is more difficult. It is likely posted in the bookstore, so they meet the intent of the law. But you cannot find it on the course search or textbook search on the University or Bookstore site.

If you call the bookstore, or the prof (email) they should be able to give you the separate ISBN for each product. I haven’t heard of a multi-semester pass
I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, but generally the passes are one semester only. If your son knows someone in the class who has already purchased and opened the bundle, there may be (actually should be) separate ISBN on each part. Of course, this could be a custom deal for that prof/class, and then you may have to buy the bundle.

If you have time, contact Wiley and ask how long the Wiley Plus is valid:

@ Sunny Florida - You got it! It’s bugging the heck out of me with a Calc class for my son. It took me a while to figure out the bundle had to have it’s own number so we were unable to search anywhere else. To boot the school isn’t offering this bundle with a used book.

Thank you all for the helpful suggestions. Honestly, I don’t know what’s going on because the bookstore is telling me the professors haven’t submitted their orders, and at least one of the professors is telling my son he gave the bookstore the order a long time ago.

Bringing this back to the “good buy” topic, I’ve found I can save so much money by purchasing texts (both new and used) online. I just my my first-ever half.com sale of my son’s summer school statistics book for more than I paid for it (on half.com) earlier this summer.

It’s the unique ISBNs, books with access codes that are good for only one use, and the loose-leaf, shrink-wrapped non-bound “books” that have to be put in a binder and thus are good for only one semester, that are the real budget-breakers.

Mom2M- thanks for the contact info for Wiley. I’m going to try to bookstore one more time, and then see if the local Wiley rep can clear up this confusion. It was the professor who mentioned something about a 3-semester access code, but I don’t know what that means.

Sunnyflorida - thanks for letting me know about the codes applying to different books. Their website is confusing, because when you go through the steps of purchasing a code, it asks you specifically what book you are using. (I hadn’t thought of the possibility of it being a different company than the text!)

My son usually buys his books early and he contacted the professor if they weren’t in so that the professor could contact the bookstore to fix the problem.

I just bought nine items (three scarves, two necklaces, a cardigan and three sleeveless tops) at coldwatercreek.com for $90. Click on “outlet” and then “summer sale 50% off”. Prices are half-off the already reduced prices in this section. Spend $100 and get another $25 off. Free shipping. I was at $99.92 and had to spend another $.08 to reach $100 so I threw in the third scarf. I don’t generally shop at Coldwater Creek but need some casual accessories. Will keep my fingers crossed that I’m pleased with the quality when my order arrives.

There is a WiFi Router for Dorms rooms for sale on Woot (deals.woot.com) today. $37 for a mini router is a great deal.

^ Make sure your school will allow a router. We got an awesome deal on a wireless printer for our son a few weeks ago only to find that his schools doesn’t accommodate wireless printers (despite being entirely wireless otherwise).
