@cptofthehouse, that is a great idea to turn the large amount card to multiple smaller amount cards for gift. Do you feel confident that this will ensure that the small amount cards are good?
I don’t know if this qualifies as a good buy of the day, but H took one of those airline offers on his Tuesday flight between Chicago and Boston to voluntarily give up his seat for another flight four hours later, and they gave him a $700 travel voucher! Woo hoo.
Nice, teri!
Just want to say thanks to those who’ve recommended coastal.com. I received my new computer glasses today (they took no longer than the local opticians) and am thrilled. Roberto Cavalli frames w/ Rx lenses for far less than the frames alone would have cost (discounted) via Amazon or other online stores. Dh paid at least 5X as much for his new glasses locally two months ago; now he’s sick about that and plans to order his next pair from these folks.
Amazon has their Fire 8.9 for 299, only today though
I have done this with Starbucks cards a number of times. I run to the Starbucks immediately and buy the smaller amount cards with the large card, I don’t see how there would be a problem with the bought cards if I do that. No problem ever reported. I have paid $400 for a $500 card and broken it into $20-50 cards to use as gifts.
The one time I was cheated was not with a Starbucks card, and was lucky I got my money back from Plastic Jungle where I bought the card. I did immediately check the card when I got it and it was good, and bought a small item at the store with it. A week later, the balance was zero on the card. So if you ever get these cards, immediately buy two smaller cards with them before the seller uses the balance on the card which can happen. If you hold the card too long and the seller beats you into using it, you are likely done I was lucky in that I went for a second purchase shortly after the first, and caught that the card was depleted well within the period of any appeal.
DS has purchased glasses from coastal. How do you know how they will look on you? Or do you try frames elsewhere and then order online ?
I don’t use coastal, but Zenni Optical. You can upload a photo of yourself to try the frames on, but I just pick the person with my shape face. I also know what type of glasses look good on me and which don’t and I have never been disappointed. H will only buy in-person from his doc’s shop-I think he’s nuts. I save SO much money going online!
I can’t buy glasses on line unless I have the exact product number and have tried them on elsewhere, or the chances are good they won’t work. I don’t look good in glasses. What I consider acceptable frames, are very few and the slightest thing different can make the frame a no go. But most people aren’t so constrained.
^ I have that problem, too. So far, I haven’t had the nerve to just go for it, although I’ve looked at tons of frames at Zenni.
The beauty of Zenni is that they are so cheap that if you don’t like them, you may have spent as little as $7 a pair. I need three different pair (driving days, driving nights and reading) and cannot wear bifocals. Insurance covers only one and the docs’ own shops are outrageously priced. I can’t affords hundreds and hundreds of dollars for what I need to get through the day and with hundreds of pairs in each style and color, Zenni works for me.
@sseamom - you mentioned driving night glasses. Are these RX distance glasses? I just returned from the eye dr with a few different scripts. I notice a real deterioration in my vision after dark so inquired about a night driving RX but she didn’t offer one. I am at a point now where I need progressive glasses for the computer that are a different strength than the progressive glasses for driving. The contacts work well for social situations but not for driving. Makes me crazy!
My husband and both sons have gotten glasses from Coastal. In fact, I picked out the glasses for my son without him even seeing them before they came in the mail! I need new glasses and am considering coastal, but am hesitating because I wear progressive lenses and need a small frame. Seems like it will be really hard to get what I need.
No, I just meant prescription sunglasses (rare in Seattle) and a clear prescription for nighttime or rainy weather. Same prescription. My sister DOES need a special prescription for nighttime and says it makes a world of difference.
Walking home. I’m in your boat. Progressive lenses, and I have a big RX too so I get thin lenses. I also need a smaller frame. But I might give Zenni a whirl. But really, the cheapest I’ve been able to get it for what I need is about $90. But that beats the $400 I just spent…if they are OK.
Okay Thumper, you go first and tell me what you think! I have to get new glasses before April!
I’m curious about online glasses too. Like thumper & walkinghome, I have a big RX, progressives, and a small face. The frames I see out in the stores are too big for me.
I had the exact same progressive RX filled on same day at Costco as sunglasses and regular glasses. LOVE the sunglasses; they work brilliantly as long as there is daylight. The regular glasses always leave me feeling dizzy when I turn my head. The frames of the regular glasses are a bit smaller than the sunglasses, but all well within acceptable margins for progressives. Now, this is probably more a function of my not being able to get used to progressives unless in full sunshine, but they are tricky to fit produce and fit properly.
I hope to read of others’ good experiences with this on-line vendor, as I agree that glasses are expensive, especially when I have so many different RXs.
I love my progressive lens. The best advice I got when I first started wearing them was “point your nose at what you want to look at”. It works!
For my next glasses I want transition lenses. I am very light sensitive but dislike the bother of putting on sunglasses for just a few minutes. I lost my most recent pair of progressive sunglasses too. I had transition glasses when they first came out about 30 years ago and they stayed shaded too much. The ones now seem to transition faster. Anyone have experience with that?
