Well, I am afraid to have to report that I did NOT find any great bargains in my quest to rebuild my parent’s kitchen equipment! I will end relying on my trustworthy Amazon for a 14-cup Cuisinart food processor and Vitamix blender (I wish I understood the obsession with that last one) and an Electrolux dishwasher (funny how ALL comments are a mix of bad and good!) The Dyson came from QVC from all places – never thought I would be buying something from infomercial-landia but I did. My mistake? Asking what brands my parents really wanted (see Vitamix)
There is just no fun in buying any of that stuff as one feels it all smoke and mirrors! Feels like getting a iPhone all over again!
Xiggi, then don’t fall into that abyss Rarely use the food processor. Never bought a dyson, happy with shark . Vitamin blender is a pure blender, forget it. Use your common sense.
I burned through three blenders on the way to finally purchasing the Vitamix. Almost nightly use for smoothies of yogurt, ice, bananas and berries. Those Williams-Sonoma Waring beehive bar blenders are not made for crushing ice. I forget the brand of the third blender, but it held up for a long time until it also gave out. The Vitamix quickly and consistently crushes ice w/o having to add ice slowly or dislodge contents stuck in the blades.
Both the Cusinart and its baby sibling, the mini-prep, sit unused in lieu of the blender or a sharp knife and wood cutting board. I do not bake enough to justify my ownership of the Kitchen Aid but it seemed like one of those things I should buy, at the time. Wiser now.
Miele vacuum is a workhorse and going strong at nearly 17 years old. Newer models are lighter and quieter, but old one still operates.
My cuisinart food processor is 32 years old. It’s sort of like my Kitchen aid…I won’t replace it! The newer ones simply aren’t that well made…like everything else.
Nice gift to your parents, xiggi, even though you didn’t get any “good buys”.
I am almost done! Only detail left is the dishwasher … down to discussions about third rack and China cycles! More than I ever wanted to know, but now I have learned a lot about US vs Euro and food catcher versus filter. It will be Bosch vs Electrolux. My parents hated their older Gaggenau just as much as the inexpensive GE.
End list was Vitamix, Dyson, and Cuisinart 14 Cup. I am happy they never heard about those Euro crockpots that are fully automatic!
Xiggi, I wound up with a Kitchen Aid dishwasher, instead of Bosch, because the slots on the bottom rack of the Kitchen Aid were set far enough apart for our every day plates, and the Bosch were problematic. But we opted for NOT doing the third rack. Good luck. If you want to adopt a parent, I’m available.
When we were on vacation this summer, there was a Bosch dishwasher there that was so quiet I think all of us opened it up sometime during the week while it was running. I didn’t know that was possible, but it was!
Just make sure the Bosch you are considering has some sort if a water stop/waterproof valve. Our old one did not… leaked in the middle of the night when it was not even on!!!
Oh good. Aquastop is used in Milele DWs. The only issue with it is that the solenoid inside will dry out at some point. But replacement should be a piece of cake for a reasonably handy person, and the upside is huge - zero leaks. Replacing the part beats refinishing damaged hardwoods.
I got my son and my husband Asics Gel Kayano running shoes for less than $100 each. I think regular price is $159, so It seems like a good deal.
My Frye boots from the Nordstrom anniversary sale were too tall and would drive me crazy to walk very far in them, but I found some I love on 6PM. They cost more, but are a higher % off, so I’m not sure if that’s a good deal or not.
Williams Sonoma is having a 30% of clearance deal, but then you can’t get free shipping, and I HATE to pay for shipping, so I wasted time putting things in that cart.
“I do not think that would stop a busted connection from the valve.”
If the connection between the line and the DW inlet is busted, then you are hosed. But that is not likely to happen. Our DW filled with water because some connection within the DW failed. Aquastop has a dual protection mechanism against such things and would have totally prevented the flood. A simple ball valve shuts the water flow if the DW begins to fill in an uncontrolled manner. There is also an inlet valve (that’s where the solenoid is) that keeps the water shut off until it is needed. Our old Bosch did not have these features.
Know the feeling, @1214mom. I wanted to buy something that was on sale today on Officedepot.com, but the shipping was $10 on a $20 order. So I hit the live chat button to see if was available at a nearby store. The rep said it wasn’t, but she would waive the shipping charges for me! A sale price and free shipping - Happy me
I purchased a top from Nordstoms last weekend…decided I wanted a different size–$88 to $23 in 4 days cannot believe it and that I caught it. I buy about 2 things a year at that store and this actually kinda ticks me off. It is too much of a difference.
