Because I’m a card member at Value Village (same as Savers) I got Memorial Day sale prices YESTERDAY at the stores-all clothing 50% off. H found a Macy’s Calvin Klein sport jacket for $13, so with the sale, it was only $6.50. He is very hard to fit and usually needs tailoring, but this fit as though it had been custom-made. I looked it up online later and it retails for more than $200.
Am still not at all a big fan of Kohls, but I had $17 of “free” money to waste and $10 off a $25 purchase, so got DH a pair of pants. The bummer was that under one of my coupons of free $ (It was for having had their credit card for a bunch of years) there was an additional 30% off coupon that had expired several days before
I didn’t get their discount card this year. Guess I’m no longer a “loyal customer”. True that!
DS2 was home for the weekend and needed some clothes for an end of year sports banquet. The Banana Republic Outlet was 50% off of everything. We found slim fit slacks and no iron slim fit dress shirts that were exactly what he wanted. We have a huge outlet mall that was a pretty crowded but we got there early so it wasn’t too bad.
DH spent the 3 days of the Memorial Day weekend out in the hot sun collecting donations for the veterans. I helped for a few hours 2 of the days, and a few others helped a bit here and there. An active duty officer and his girlfriend helped at the end of the day yesterday. I then made dinner reservations at McCormicks and Schmidts, as they offered a free main course to active duty/reserved /retired military (So did Hooters but my DH nixed that!). So we got 4 dinners for the price of 2 yesterday. Thank you, veterans, for your service,
H booked a trip for the two of us to Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok for late October and got the round trip tickets for all destinations for the two of us for just over $2K from the west coast. He is now working on the hotels and there look like many good options for 4 and 5 star hotels at great prices. This will be my first trip to an of these places so I am really looking forward to it. H has been on business before so he is excited to be a tourist.
Few days ago I took an Emirates flight from JFK to Milan with D2. I bought both of those tickets for 750 round trip. At check in I asked the rep if there was any upgrade available. He said I could pay 450 for each upgrade (X2 for us). Those tickets usually go for 3500+ each. I jumped at it and it was the best business class flight I have ever taken. It was everything they have advertised on TV - bar lounge, shower, flatbed and Veuve Clicquot Champagne. I am going to give it a shot again on my return flight.
I have done this a few times - ask to buy upgrade at check in. Many airlines instead of giving them away they would sell those seats very cheaply. @showmom858 - ask for upgrade on those long flights.
Thanks for that post @oldfort. That reminded me that we have a lay-over next month when we take a flight across country. We’re flying United and I had read somewhere that you can buy day passes to United Club rooms on e-bay. I have two for the way there (came with our cc) but I’m going to grab two for the way back. We used the passes a couple of years ago when we had a couple of hours to wait for an international flight and it was much nicer than hanging out at the gate. So, if anyone else is going to be in the same lay-over situation - get your club pass on e-bay! Free snacks, clean bathrooms, comfy chairs and I believe free wine and beer.
I flew FC on Emirates in 2014. Best flight ever. It was on an A380 for the first leg, so got to make use of the on-plane shower.
We got the tickets with Alaska miles. Remember those alliance partners when looking for flights!
Philosophy is giving a 30% off friends and family discount. Nordstroms is pricematching so I purchased it from there and also got a 6% cashback rebate from ebates.
Not sure this counts…but I called my credit card company today and it turns out…I had enough points accumulated to pay for two recently booked plane tickets…in total. My account has been credited!
Speaking of credit cards. I have a Citibank visa that’s supposed to cost $95 a year. Every year I call them and they credit me the $95, if I spend a small amount of money within a certain time. I’ve done this many times.
I just saved us $86 and change because I forgot to pre-register for the thing we were going to attend tonight :-t
And I bought a wicking sleeveless shirt for the gym for $6. Probably could have stuck with t shirts but the gym doesn’t have adequate A/C or fans I and its HOT in there.
D used frequent flyer miles to upgrade to first class for trip to China from NY. She said it was totally worth it. It had flat bed, etc
A good way to travel if you can afford it.
Our D used my FF miles to join us for my out of state MD appointments–priceless to us! Cost 25,000 points + $30 r/t!
I went to Nordstrom Rack in need of a bra that had a lower cut on the side so that it wouldn’t show when wearing a sleeveless blouse. After trying on about 8 different bras, the one that fit me best didn’t have a price tag. So I went to the checkout counter and said that I wanted to buy it but I needed to know the price first. The salesperson curiously said that it should have been pulled from the floor because it was marked down so much, but that she could sell it to me for the price shown – and she pointed to the checkout screen – it said $0.1. I said that I’d buy it for that and I gave her a penny.
During last night’s West Coast Tony Awards telecast, Hamilton Broadway tweeted out that a new, limited block of tickets had just been released for now through 2017. I immediately went to Ticketmaster, plugged in a random date for this October, and miraculously snagged 2 tickets in 4th row orchestra center at FACE VALUE ($1135.20 for both tickets)!!! While more than I’ve ever paid for tickets in my life, equivalent seats cost 3-4x as much on resale sites. First thing I did when I woke up this morning was check my email to make sure it wasn’t a dream :).
Congrats to you westcoast! Is that correct? Over $500 a ticket? (and that’s a good deal - yikes - I’ll never see it!)
Yes, abasket: face value for “Premium” seats is $549 each + Ticketmaster fees. I think standard seats are $199, but none of those popped up for me. Apparently, show producers are raising the prices even higher to try to thwart scalpers. It’s crazy!
