Your Good Buy Of The Day (Part 1)

Thank you all for the feedback. I just got a new VM phone for Christmas so probably won’t switch soon. But I like the portability for out of the country use and frankly, it looks like a real bargain for use in-country too.

VM slows data down after 2.5 gig I think but even running Nav, Pandora, etc on long car trips. I have never hit the cap in the 6 or so years I’ve had the plan. My daughter used to (snapchat videos flying in and out of her phone all day long) but her limit was lower with the VM iphone plan, like 1.5. She said the slowdown didn’t affect her at all. Now she’s on a Verizon plan with my parents (because she wanted the new iphone and so was given that for graduation) and is constantly having to deal with data caps or it costs a fortune.

@notrichenough Google Project Fi includes this ^ https://fi.google.com/about/ and I love the ability to get a refund for unused data. I think I’d do well a $30/mo plan there, maybe not even that. One of the phones available is $199.

…and with that will head over to the cell phone thread, thank you @waitingtoexhale .

TMobile allows you to use all your phones as hotspots. They never charge for using too much data, but do throttle you after you reach your limit. For us, the limit is 2.5 GB, which we rarely use, since we are often on wifi. S has hit 2.5 gb and been throttled and says that speed is quite slow.

There is now another whole thread on cell phones…costs and plans.

Just finally signed H up and was instantly approved for 70K miles on United Explorer card for $3k spending in 1st 90 days. Will get $50 credit off the $95 annual fee after 1st charge! That means $45 for 70k miles, which should be good for some travel. We will also get 2 lounge passes, but rarely use them. Don’t need free luggage fee, as we already get that with our status as silver/gold premier. All in all, seems like a decent deal and we easily spend over $3k on a CC in 90 days. The deadline for the deal is 6/30.

(After I signed up H, the targeted offer dropped to 50K miles for me, no $50 statement credit. Wasn’t planning to sign myself as well and now I certainly am not interested.)

@4beardolls just got an email for priceline 10% code for express deals or name your price for hotel rooms.
It’s a 48 hour deal, expires June 30
This is the code

@Himom, I just tried to get that 70K deal, but sounds like it’s a targeted link. That’s a great deal. I’ve seen British Air for higher, but never any US airline.

If anyone is interested in a nest thermostat, they are on sale for $50 off through the 4th of July. https://store.nest.com/product/thermostat/

Yes, it us targeted and will get an extra 5,000 miles for adding an authorized user and baking a purchase.

Love the typos, @HImom  What are you baking?? (spoken as the queen of typos and weird autocorrects!)

Agree - that’s the deal of the day @HImom ! We have a nest thermostat. It’s pretty cool - unless your husband is the only one that knows how to make it work! Took me at least a couple of weeks to figure it out!

Autocorrects on the iPhone make me crazy. Oh well! You get the gist.

sort of a good buy today…My XM radio in car finished it’s trial period and I was billed $92 for six months. eek! Called and asked what to do to lower cost. They were not helpful. Told them I saw a deal for $25 for 5 months for new subscribers and I wanted that price. They said no, you are not a new subscriber. I said fine, cancel me and I’ll call you back next month and be new. They agreed to the $25/5 months. Minor victory as now I’m guessing we’ll be doing this song and dance again in 5 months, just like I do with Comcast. ugh.

^we do the XM radio dance every year. It is on the calendar. Sorry I do not remember what we pay this year–but under
$100. H skips customer service and asks for billing, threatens to cancel and gets an offer. Ever year

DH does what @oregon101’s DH does. Important though to know they have several different plans and offer different service, so inquire as to what stations you get. And NEVER EVER give them a credit card. Pay by check only so they can’t auto bill. Their billing practices are horrible. They don’t send out a renewal until after it kicked in.

@gosmom my current car doesn’t have satellite radio (what’s up with that Subaru?!) but my previous one did - I was able to get the 5 months for $25 over and over again - I would just tell them that while I enjoyed the radio it wasn’t worth it to me to pay more than that. When they would re-up my plan, I would write the 5 month end date on my calendar so I would be sure to call again and renew.

We have two cars, one with satellite and one without. I traded with my husband for the FM radio one because I found I was choosing to listen to NPR on the FM station instead of using the satellite radio. Nothing like Satellite radio for long trips so you don’t have to keep searching for a good station, but for my quick drives to work and around town, I like NPR the best and our local station, WHYY in Philadelphia, has great programming.

I was paying for a satellite radio subscription and was using it mostly to listen to NPR when traveling. Then I realized I could plug my phone into the car radio’s auxiliary jack and listen to KQED live on the KQED app. When I don’t like what’s on the live station, I download podcasts such as This American Life and listen to them. Now I donate the amount I used to pay Sirius to KQED.

^^just noted on my calendar…

LLBean has an extra 20% off over the holiday weekend with code “July20” .

Ordered 2 of a lightweigh pointelle stitch cardigan sweater I like from them - regularly $69 each - with the sale, the extra 20% off and some LLBean bucks I had, I paid a total of $23 for both of them.

Sam’s club is free to Costco members through July 4th. Apparently Sam’s club is taking advantage of the frustration many Costco members have with the credit card switch from AMEX to Citi VISA.
