Your Good Buy Of The Day (Part 1)

I love Greek yogurt, it has like 14g protein per serving.

My yogurt deal is 2 16 oz containers of Ellenos for $9. Sometimes plain (natural) is less. It’s often a carp shoot WRT flavors, but there’s always honey and plain.

Wow. That is a great Ellenos price! Who’s having the special?

Went back to Costco and got 4 giant blueberry bushes and another 2 for 1 yogurt deal. And a few more things that set us back about $300.

Costco warehouse online has a good deal on prime rib, $30 off 7 pounder. There are others, too. Delivery 2-3 days.

I made 24 (5.3oz) servings of yogurt with a gallon of whole milk I bought for $2.40!

I used to make yogurt years ago, but hadn’t made any recently. It hit me how much our family has spent on those little containers–convenient, lots of fun flavors, but…$$$. So a few weeks ago I started making my own again. Super easy–You all should try it!

I make yogurt too, with an heirloom culture and a now use heating pad. Drain it and voila, greek. I started making it because full/extra fat was so hard to find. It literally costs pennies.

@BunsenBurner - the factory store on Airport Way in Georgetown. Open Wed-Sat. Close enough that I can stop in at lunchtime.

Thanks, zeebamom!

@Sybylla - you just make it normally and then drain it? How do you drain it to get that nice Greek texture?

I just use coffee filters in a sieve (overnight in the fridge).

@Sybylla

Do you purchase the yogurt culture regularly?

When I was making yogurt weekly, I preferred the final product that was made with an envelope of purchased yogurt starter. When I’d use the last batch to make a fresh batch, it didn’t turn out as well.

I haven’t tried using grocery store yogurt as a starter though.

For greek style yogurt, I use a clean woven dish towel lining a pasta strainer over a bowl in the fridge to drain the whey off overnight. When we kept chickens, the whey went to the chickens, and they sure did love it.

I have used a good quality store bought plain yogurt for starter - like Stonyfield. I feel like we talked ALOT about yogurt on the Instant Pot thread!!!

I have done both, but my base starter was from cultures for health, but i go off piste now and again, I have used probiotic powder, I tried some siggies, but I go back to the bulgarian. I make ice cube trays up every few batches for freezer storage of starters if I don’t have leftovers from the last batch. 2 cubes are enough for a new batch (probably a liter).

I have only ever cultured from the last batch, so I still have the 2nd pouch. It is fail proof.

So I’ve been waiting and calling and calling and waiting for the $20 AmEx giftcard I was supposed to get with my newspaper renewal last NOVEMBER. We like to get the paper and actually hold it, not read it on line. Well finally got a supervisor who just credited my account $30/extended the subscription 2 mos. Its really no skin off their back to do this, to keep a longtime customer happy. Complaining on facebook and their page did not good. Didn’t try twitter. Just finally got a supervisor who stopped dragging it out.

Could have posted this in the exercise shoes thread…

Went to this great high end second hand/thrift shop in my D’s neighborhood this morning. Told myself I could only check out the athletic wear section - we had been there another time and I didn’t see this section until we were ready to leave.

Found a pair of New Balance (good for purposeful walking but not running) new for $24! Grey with hot pink and blue accents - adding them to the collection! NB are among my favorite non-running athletic shoe.

I just bought a pair of New Balance shoes on Amazon for $21! There are a number of styles on sale, but this was nearly the cheapest in my size.

Molbak’s had planting container sale - buy one, get one free! Wow, we walked out with 4 large containers and a coupon for 20% off plants good during next week.

I am attending a conference with H. Normally, we get comp registration, so I can’t get lodging. They stopped offering comp reg, so I registered and lo and behold I could reserve a room. I assumed the rates would be astronomical but tried anyway and was able to get a room at fed govt rates for $167/nite instead of $299 or the $207 I was going to stay to be 1.5 miles away! I’m very pleased and the hotel is adjoining the conference center, so we can rest as desired! H is very pleased as well.

The lower nightly rate makes it much less painful to catch a cab between hotel and airport.
