Inspired by the “monkey art” on the octogenarian thread
, let’s talk about “art” you have, what you like, don’t like, etc…. Feel free to post pictures!
In our previous home of 26 years, I had very little hung on the walls. I just seemed not know the vibe I was looking for. I’m not generally one to hang human photos much on walls (I will frame and do table top framed photos. I had for a long time various cross stitch items I made and had framed but grew tired of that and felt it was dated so removed much of it.
In our current home of 2 years, I’ve really embraced wall art to reflect our interests, our home vibe (on the water) our more casual living style. I’ll try and post a pic or two later but one thing I’ve had a lot of fun with is a gallery style wall of random pieces each with meaning to me/us. Some nature photos. A piece of embroidery my DIL made for me. A framed vintage looking seed pack that fits my botanical like and vibe. A map of our home state.
I did recently have a family photo enlarged to 16 x 20 and matted and framed in a pop of red frame that I love. I also have a framed art piece- no big value to it at all - and while it’s not really me/us, it was a piece from my mom’s house that she had forever and silly, but my kids love seeing it and comment on it ALL the time. An ode to mom. ![]()
My wall art is a mixture. I have some of the framed vintage looking posters of places that are special to us as well as a few framed family photos and a painting done by an artist in my extended family. So just stuff l like and is personal to me. That’s downstairs. My late H hung some framed portraits of our kids upstairs and they aren’t the greatest pictures, but I have never gotten around to taking them down/ changing them out.
My wall art is half my paintings and half other artists. I have a pastel of my great-grandmother at 16 on the mantelpiece which I quite like. Two Hiroshige’s and a pastel portrait of my younger so reading The Lord of the Rings with his favorite stuffed animals watching him are above the sofa. Over the desk is an aerial photo of the house I designed for my parents.
Dining room is mostly other local artists, but my favorite piece in there is a double matted QR code which gives you the ridiculous wi-fi code that our older son created. (Younger son put it in the frame, because it was so hard to share with his friends.)
Oh and there’s also a lot of African sculpture as both my parents and dh’s parents were in Africa in the foreign service. The two masks are from Mali. The abstract piece is a Makonde carving from Tanzania.
We don’t have a ton on our walls - they are plaster. Most probably are pictures of our kids and cats. And some items from our travels. But sitting here in our den, we have 2 framed Star Wars movie posters, a Raiders poster signed by the cast/crew, a reprint poster from the Chicago’s world fair, what used to be part of a Space Riders pinball machine. It’s glass and lights up. And finally a small print the kids got us from Marshall’s of a cat that looks like one of ours but painted in the style of Van Gogh’s Starry Night.
Maybe I’ll take a picture of the cat since I’m sitting here looking at it
I love the wifi QR code!!!
I am not good at committing to pieces of art, and I’m not a great decorator either. We don’t have much on our walls at all right now, bc we have a crazy cat who knocks things down. Normally we have a combo of things my husband has done, places we’ve been, one photo of our cats that I love, and other random things.
I know this is an unpopular opinion in some circles but I absolutely hate “art” that is designed to go with a color scheme in a room. In our living, den and dining areas, we only have original art (most from my home country but some bought here) - no “names”, we are not in that league haha, but things we like, some bought from smaller galleries but also a number from artists we personally know. Varied styles but it’s art so that’s fine as far as I’m concerned. In our powder room, laundry room and passageways we have some framed vintage travel posters, as well as a couple of movie posters. In our bedroom we have an etching of me (long story) and a framed poster of the stars above where we married on our wedding day, which was part of my 20th anniversary gift to my husband.
I love this!
We don’t have any art on our walls so no pics to show. FIL is an artist and has tried to make our home his gallery ever since we married. We have a few of his pieces that we hang in a hallway when he and MIL visit. Their last visit was eight years ago, and they are too old now with no inclination to come to AZ, so the drawings/paintings sit in a closet. If DH goes before I do, I’ll quickly gift them back to his family. Otherwise, the chore will fall to our son.
I have “home decor” pieces that sit on surfaces, but the only wall hangings are an iron collage thing in our foyer filled with our son’s annual school/academy pics and two wedding pics in our family room.
I like what I can’t afford. I see things and think “perfect” for a spot on a wall in my house and then I look at the price and keep the cheap art I have.
We have some framed prints on our walls as well as family photos. H is a very good amateur photographer so we have enlarged and framed his work. This first one is from our trip to Bermuda in 2024. The second one is an original art work from D2’s friend who is an artist.
I have a wall of framed photos of our kids/family in the living room/den and landscapes of favorite places. They are all in black frames with white mats except one large gallery wrapped photo on canvas of our trip to Scotland. It just has H and the 2 little kids in the distance on the trail at the Fairy Pools. I do really like this wall. We also have some local art from friends who are artists. I have hung up some encaustic work I did in a class I took. We have some art our kids have done (one cool crow thing, and one embroidered piece, amongst others). We are very eclectic and don’t try to have a certain style, but the pieces all mean something to us.
Walked around my house looking at the walls. When you live somewhere 20 years, you kind of forget. I forgot we have a bunch of stained glass. In the picture below starting top left and going clockwise.
My beloved picture of my kids that’s coming to the nursing home with me.
The stained glass that came with the house, but was hidden in the house for over 20 years. We only found it because MIL taught the family that lived here in the 60s-80s and the mom told H that she covered it up inside/out when they sided the house because it was cheaper. It’s framed with an old door frame we found in the basement. The glass changes color with the time of day. sometimes it looks completely green/blue
A stained glass we found at an estate sale down the street
This one is bigger than it looks. It’s from 1910 - the same year our house was built. We (or H) exchanged it with an antique store for our old porch column caps. When we redid the porch, the caps were too painted over to paint again, but too fragile to dip to have the paint stripped, so we got new ones. And gave them to the antique/salvage place for the stained glass
@ClassicMom98 I love your stained glass! My mom always had stained glass pieces hanging in her windows, I don’t know what happened to it all when they moved out of their house.
I have eclectic things that we have collected over time
Below are pieces my mom had, the piece on the left was made by my S in HS. I don’t know the significance of the other two pieces I just like them and they remind me of my mom:
These two paintings were given to me by a family friend when they moved into AL. He and his wife collected art and he wanted me to have them because I was a dancer growing up.
We got this in Paris in a shop when we were stationed in Germany. It matches nothing in my home and it’s one of my favorite things ever!
A friend of my mom’s painted this
I love stained glass SO much.
We have quite a bit of art. My great uncle was an artist and I have inherited quite a few of his oils. They work well in our old house, and are in our living room. Most of our first floor is family art.
Second floor is more contemporary art that we’ve purchased at art shows over the years.
Third floor is more family pictures and prints of places we’ve lived or travelled.
I love art! My d is going to have a lot of pairing down some day!
Over a year ago, I was given many pieces of framed art previously owned by my aunt who passed away. I love them all but am terrible at hanging stuff up (yes, I know I can hire someone but keep changing my mind about what should go where). In my living room I have stuff I arrived here with and later acquired, including Audubon prints from my late brother and Chinese/Japanese prints cut out of calendars.
I will post later in February by which time I hope to have everything on walls in time for the Lunar New Year party I am hosting on 2/28 for my grupo inglés-español.
I use the command strips often for hanging things. The ones I have are supposively good for up to 16 pounds. I personally would not trust that weight but they def are ok for something a few pounds or less.
