Your kid's favorite books

Do you remember and/or are you nostalgic about certain books that your kids grew up reading? Any favorite books you remember reading as a child?
I remember my D liked the American Girl books, Babysitter’s Club, Babysitter’s Little Sister (she really liked those and had almost the entire series).
S liked Harry Potter and the Boxcar Kids.
The Bearenstein (sp?) Bear books were a favorite of both kids. They also both enjoyed Harry Potter as well.

The Owl and the Pussycat was a book I fondly remember reading to both my kids. I loved the illustrations!

My mom loved reading the original Winnie the Pooh stories to both my kids. She also read them to me growing up

I had a voracious reader but the ones I remember her fondly reading over and over again:
Goodnight Moon
Franklin the Turtle Books
Magic Tree House
Harry Potter Series
Percy Jackson Series

Goodnight Moon was a favorite in our house too! I still have our copy. It was given to us, along with a few other books and baby clothes, by H’s boss when our D was born.

Wasn’t there also a Franklin the Turtle tv show?

I don’t believe our son ever read “stories” although he loved being read to. One of his favorites was The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins (a Dr. Seuss book that does not rhyme) but that was because it was a favorite of mine and he loved the voices. I read to him (and DH) a lot, but I don’t recall kiddo reading stories to himself. Once he learned to read, he liked “how things work” books, and once he was old enough to click a mouse and surf the Internet, it was more of the same. He’d read a white paper before a story. He took a couple of speed reading courses in high school to help him consume information faster; he doesn’t read for pleasure. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him read a physical book. I’m not sure how he got through his English classes… Maybe he isn’t really educated.

When I was young, I loved the Anne of Green Gables, Nancy Drew, and Bobbsey Twins series, The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet, Ballet Shoes, Watership Down, The Chronicles of Narnia, and a book about a wooden doll, Hitty: Her First Hundred Years which I read again this past summer and holds up as adult reading.

Off Topic: Does anyone know how to underline in this new interface?

DDs favorite book as a wee one was “Blueberries for Sal”

DSs was “Harold and the Purple Crayon”

I loved the Bobbsey Twins! I wonder if I still have any of mine…

I forgot to mention the cute books by Richard Scary. My kids loved those! S loved “What people do all Day.”

@thumper1 purple is my favorite color and when H and I were first together and I had just started teaching he gave me “Harold and Purple Crayon” to keep in my classroom. I read it to both D and S and S wanted a red crayon…

When they were young, my children were delighted by The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Other beloved series: Harry Potter, Magic Treehouse, and Poppy.

I liked the book “Corduroy” and D21 like “Click Clack Moo” not sure if the exact title. When they were little h would read “The Little Red Hen” to the kids…complete with “ Bawk, bawk, b-gawk” sound effects from him.

My kid was never into books. Her favorite nightly read was what we called “ food book”. It was a Harry and David catalogue. We would say things like “Tower of treats! How many pears are there? Let’s count 1-2-3-4 pears! Fruit of the month? What do we get in July? And what month comes next? August! That’s right! Which month do you get the most! Etc…” When my parents would babysit they were like “I don’t understand how we are supposed to read this to her!” She grew up to love food and math. Lol.

My favorite books were The Boxcar Children, B is for Betsy, Mitch and Amy, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, All of a Kind Family. See a pattern?? Hint. I didn’t like A wrinkle in time but LOVED Meet the Austin’s. Hated the Pippi Longstocking series but adored The Noisy Village series.

My dad would read Paddington and The Boxcar Children to me when I was a kid- my favorite memories. The Spooky Old Tree was my favorite Berstain Bear book- I still have it!

My kids loved Magic Treehouse, Kingdom Keepers, 39 Clues and Harry Potter. The Penderwicks made D21 a reader. Nothing compares to Percy Jackson- they will still pick those up. All of us read Percy, very entertaining.

The first series younger S ever loved was the Ranger’s Apprentice. He loved them so much, I read them afterwards. They were great. I was sad when I finished. It felt like saying goodbye to old friends.

I work in the pediatric early literacy field so books were everywhere in our home and part of daily routines and transitions.

My favorite book as a child was The Little House by Virginia Burton. I also read lots of Nancy Drew and Bobbsey Twins.

In addition to many mentioned above (HP, Berenstain Bears, Richard Scarry) my kids loved the Tacky The Penguin series and Junie B Jones. And a certain Sesame Street series, “Growing Up” which featured titles like “It’s No Fun To Be Sick” “Don’t Be Shy” “Big Bird Can Share” “Bert And The Broken Teapot”.

I loved Little Women, Little Men, Jo’s Boys, & Eight Cousins. Also, Nancy Drew, Bobbsey Twins and Patsy Belden series. Read Little House on the Prairie books multiple times. My D had no interest in any of these until she read Little Women when the Wynona Ryder film came out. Most were too outdated for her. She love The Babysitter’s Club books and E.L. Koeningsburg books. Both kids are now voracious readers as adults, but S didn’t read many books on his own as a child; lots of magazines - SI Kids and others.

My middle son’s first “acting” was in preschool in a skit based on the 500 hats (used paper bowls for the hats). He went on to be theater kid in HS.

My kids (all boys) loved the Thomas the Tank Engine books, Berenstain Bears, Richard Scary, Dr. Seuss, Owl Moon, Eric Carle, the Napping House, Sandra Boynton books, and later Nate the Great, Magic Tree House, Harry Potter, Kurt Vonnegut, and other SciFi/Fantasy , my youngest loved The Pigeon on the Bus books too.

Like @maya54 I loved the Mitch and Amy, the Austins and All of A Kind Family, along with the Half Magic and related books, and E. Nesbitt. Could not get my kids to read those which was sad to me. I also loved A Wrinkle in Time and my kids did not like it nearly as well.

My S loves Harry Potter series since he read the first one for AR book test at 6 year old.

My kids loved Peggy Rathman’s books, especially Good Night Gorilla (all time favorite) and then Ten Minutes till Bed Time. They also loved First Book of Sushi (give it a try!) and Mr. Brown Can Moo (all great books to read aloud). Later, the Magic Treehouse and Magic Schoolbus books and Percy Jackson.

He then finished one book of The Hunger Games, but his teacher stopped him saying it is improper to read that book at age 7, after he completed the AR test.

I loved Corduroy too and both of my kids liked it too! The drawings were so cute!
