My Sister’s Keeper. Loved the book. Hate hate hated the movie.
Oh, unfortunately I’ve seen plenty of bad movies.
But focusing on movies that others seemed to like but I disliked:
Eyes Wide Shut
Silence of the Lambs (didn’t watch the sequels) - How big IS that basement? I don’t need to think about cannibalism thank you very much %-( lalalalala
Dune. Worst thing ever. Garish and wierd – no flavor of the book at all. Reminded me of Barney… Could Peter Jacksin please take a shot at it?
Blue Velvet.
All That Jazz – I am right there with you, @MADad.
Dumb and Dumber–I saw it when I was 6, and I actually told my parents “I can’t believe I just wasted two hours of my life” the moment it ended.
Babe–the little girl throwing a tantrum over the hand-painted dollhouse made me feel so bad that it ruined the movie for me entirely
I LOVE Babe. “That’ll do pig. That’ll do.”
All That Jazz is one of the best movies ever made. I have seen that movie about 10 times.
Reservoir Dogs is a great movie too.
I guess I am in the wrong thread.
Bombs, Rambos, chainsaws, and talking dogs are in the categories of their own,
Here is a short list of movies that received some thumbs up from the critics and/or public - and I hated these:
Silence of the Lambs - just ugh.
The English Patient - I ran out of popcorn… is it over? (Titanic belongs in here, too)
81/2 - WTH?
Once Upon a Time in America - depressing
Just to name a few. As soon as I recall recall the horrid highly acclaimed foreign flicks I watched, I will come up with a bunch more.
nominated for Best Animated picture this year—Anomalisa. If this wins, it is a very sorry year for animation.
People in theater near us left half way through. They were the smart ones…I want those two hours back–and my money!
When I was in high school, I regularly ditched high school to go to my boyfriend’s Italian film class in college. So I have very fond, romantic memories of the Italian films on this list, (Death in Venice, 8-1/2). I never felt so sophisticated as I did sitting in on those classes!
Dr.Zhivago - My dad made us watch it. All 4 hours. Like, why? Also all the SAW films - not scary and too gory.
I love a lot of these movies you guys posted, One was a Monty Python movie that I thought was so stupid I left after 10 minutes. I hated Angela’s Ashes.
Eyes Wide Shut I agree was dreadful. How could you make an orgy boring?
I liked The English Patient. It was very pretty, but it completely missed the point of the book.
The Clint Eastwood/Hilary Swank movie Million Dollar Baby. I also seem to remember a Clint Eastwood movie with a flatulent dog.
Caligula - 1979
“Caligula - 1979”
This brings back memories. My boyfriend at the time dragged me to see it. Awful awful movie.
Many years ago I hated the Warren Beatty reincarnation film, “Heaven Can Wait”, because I so despised the idea that if someone comes back as another person, with no memory of their “past life” that they are still the same person.
I’ve said many times that “My Dinner with Andre” was the longest two hours of my life. Andre was a pompous fool, and I thought the movie was finally going to SAY that, but it never did.
Oh, and “You’ve Got Mail” --corporate takeover smashing a woman’s business, masquerading as romantic comedy.
For me - I hate schlock, which is why I hate the Schwarzenegger/Rambo stuff and movies in the Airport genre (big dumb plot, stars picking up a paycheck and phoning the performances in). If it’s a talented filmmaker like Tarantino or Woody Allen, I may dislike the film but probably won’t hate it if I think the writer or director is trying to tell me something I’m just not getting.
Then again, I’ll avoid films by talented filmmakers if I think I just can’t bear to watch them. I thought Melancholia was a fascinating, very good movie, but I know I couldn’t watch the director’s (Lars Von Trier) edgier stuff.
I’m one of the 5 people on the planet who thought that Troy was a genuinely good movie. But I don’t see why they couldn’t have found an opportunity for Sean Bean to take off his shirt the way all those other guys did.
Movies I hated:
Avatar
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Revolutionary Road
Every James Bond movie except Skyfall
I also hate Me Before You even though it hasn’t been released yet.
“It’s Showtime!!”–I loved All That Jazz.
I have been saved viewing many films by my son who although he may like a film will say “Mom, don’t go see it. You’ll hate it.” Usually a Quentin Tarantino movie.
