I think it’s true that Penelope Cruz is not a good actress . . . in English. Especially early in her career. In Spanish, I don’t know if I would call her a great actress (like Meryl Streep, for instance), but she’s undoubtedly a great star. Talking in English seems to suppress her charisma.
We could start a thread on actors and actresses we don’t care for.
Penelope Cruz was great in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
@dstark I’ve found that men look upon Penelope Cruz more favorably than women.
“The Green Mile”
Awful movie, in my opinion, and it’s not because I have any particular problem with Woody Allen. Even Javier Bardem seemed tedious in it, and I usually like him.
Napolean Dynamite
@doschicos count me, very much female, to those who think Penelope Cruz can’t do wrong. I think she’s all around fabulous, and just keeps getting better with age.
Speaking of actress, I did not like Meryl Streep for many years. Husband and I called her Sterile Meep
Ingmar Bergman’s Cries and Whispers. I saw it over forty years ago and to this day I begrudge the amount of time spent watching it.
Its good reviews had to be nothing more than a case of complimenting the Emperor on his fine new clothes when in fact he has nothing on.
@katliamom I liked early Meryl Streep. Deer Hunter, Sophie’s Choice, Silkwood. I’ve found her more recent work less impressive.
Which reminds me of another movie I really disliked - Mamma Mia!
Agreed, @doschicos… Meryl Streep’s worst performance ever.
Penelope Cruz has a certain luminous quality to her beauty that is independent of any acting talent or lack thereof.
Alfie (Michael Caine)
Xanadu (Olivia Newton-John) - first time dh & I ever walked out of a theater
any horror movie - I cannot take the gore
Monster’s Ball. Just awful. Of course, it may have ended well. I couldn’t finish watching.
“Mamma Mia!” Oh good lord, what a terrible movie. Mr. B OTOH loves it. Sigh.
I also disliked “Whiplash.”
Does anyone remember “Lost in America”? Got great reviews, I hated it.
We generally do not like movies with Cameron Diaz in them.
Also dislike any movie which starts with the premise of an abduction or killing of a young child.
I’ll watch anything … including Ishtar & Last Year in Marienbad.
The only film I’ve walked out of was Shoot the Moon… attempted to see it in the 1980s…can anyone tell me if it’s worth giving it another chance
I have a good idea of what types of movies I like, so if I rarely choose or watch movies that I hate The movies below were either chosen by others or unique decisions:
Manos: The Hands of Fate – I heard that this was the worst movie ever released in US theaters, so I was curious to see how bad it was. Manos fails on every level to an almost inconceivable degree – plot, acting, cinematography, etc. For example, Manos was filmed on a hand held camera that could only record 32 seconds at a time without sound. The camera segments were edited very poorly to combine and add sound. One of the main actors was high on LSD during his scenes. It was so bad that even the actors walked out during the initial screening. Trying to make it through the whole movie is extremely challenging.
Nitro Circus: The Movie – The TV show was far from my favorite, but it had some impressive and interesting students, so I decided to check out how they stepped things up in the movie. Instead the movie steps things down from the TV show, with much weaker and less interesting stunts and a group of new characters that were poorly introduced, so there was no real personal connection. It was essentially just a poorly done ad for their live show.
Hairspray – This is one of the only movies that I was unable to watch from start to finish. Musicals just aren’t my thing, and I didn’t find the plot interesting, or the role casting of John Travolta as a mother.
Bruno – I’m not into minority stereotype mocumentary type comedy, but I found Bruno to be much worse than others of this genre, like Borat. It wasn’t interesting or funny to me.
Yes, I could never understand the love for Napolean Dynamite. I hated very second of it.
My husband hates Napoleon Dynamite and anything with Sasha Baron Cohen too. But he loves , Pretty Woman and gets a lot of ribbing for it in a house full of girls
