Your Mount Rushmore of Bread

I need a distraction. I hope you aren’t all gluten free so you can participate.

This was a question on the Food News podcast.

What would be on your Mount Rushmore (so 4 choices) of favorite bread items. Not brands so much, but varieties.

I love bread products. Making them, smelling them, feeling them, eating them! I do take care in not overindulging but sure do appreciate the products.

My initial thoughts:

  1. Fresh, crusty sourdough
  2. An authentic croissant (Costco’s are fine but I’m talking a couple leagues up… )
  3. Markouk (a paper thin Lebanese flatbread - fill with fillings, roll it up - chef’s kiss!)
  4. Cinnamon raisin bread toasted and slathered w/good butter

No calories will be consumed by reading this thread. :baguette_bread: :croissant: :bread:

A good crusty French baguette.

Me too!

Number one will always be a croissant. Preferably made and eaten in Paris with a cappuccino

I like to make basic harvest loaves with white, wheat, and some rye. And lemon sweet rolls. Making bread today actually!

I also like to eat pumpernickel but haven’t been able to find it in the PNW at all.

Baguette
Challah
The Naan stuffed with raisins, nuts, and coconut that the local Indian restaurant makes
Dark multigrain

Bonus points for butter on top

The “Mount Rushmore of bread” just made me think of the loaf that everyone’s ignored for far too long: old, misshapen and hard as a rock!

Oh goodness -

  1. Brioche
  2. Croissant bread
  3. Cranberry walnut
  4. Banana bread

I am so spoiled to have a wonderful baker and numerous bakeries nearby. Unfortunately I have to ration my carbs so will be enjoying these even more when I do indulge!

Real rye bread (not the sorry imitation sold in plastic bags in the sliced bread section)
Nice baguette
Uzbek flatbread (kinda like naan but way tastier)
Cranberry walnut bread

Y’all making me want to run to the store and buy a baguette or something!

Cranberry walnut is a good one. Really, any dried fruit + nut and in a yeast based bread (also good in a non-yeast) is a winner!

Croissant (as mentioned better in Paris with real butter)
Parker House rolls
Cheese jalapeno cornbread
Homemade white bread (which now I’ve got to go make…)

Thought this thread wouldn’t add calories. Shoulda known better.

Rye with a nice crispy crust. Shapiro’s in Indy is my favorite. No one else does it like them.

I don’t know why I’m reading this when I’m already hungry. Big Mistake.

(1) Loaf of Italian Bread that’s crusty on the outside and soft inside, with butter (also, this reminds me of my grandpa, so that’s probably why)
(2) Really good everything bagel - that includes salt as part of the “Everything” seasoning
(3) HOT buttermilk biscuit, with butter
(4) Pumpkin chocolate chip bread, in the fall, with hot apple cider

For me it’s a crusty baguette or a real croissant both consumed somewhere in France!

Brioche and banana bread for sure!! Also a spicy indian bread - it’s similar to a white bread recipe but with some spices and chilies! Yum!

Honorable Mention for Sister Shubert’s panned dinner rolls

Did Mount Rushmore get a 5th occupant?!

No Mount Rushmore but I have a fondness for the light fluffy pita bread.

Not the thick type but the light thinner ones.

If that makes sense.

Someone told me that the lighter type was Lebanese and the thicker type was Israeli. But I really don’t know.

Maybe someone could help me out. If I’d made any sense at all

I believe it’s the Greek pita that is thicker.
