(My last “chance me” thread ever) I’m a spring transfer '12 applicant majoring in communication, journalism, or sociology. Just want to see how you guys think about my chances at U of Mich, Wisconsin-Madison, U of I, and Cornell (Reach? Match? Otherwise?):

HS - I’m an international student and my school doesn’t use the GPA system, so I can’t tell. Got poor grades, though, which explains why I wasn’t admitted into any colleges.

College - In my 1st semester in my sophomore year, which is my last semester.
In a community college in IL
GPA: 3.935/ 4.000 (Honors Participant plus PTK member)
EC’s: Employee at International Students’ Office; President of Asian Students’ Club; part of Honors Leadership Team
Accomplishments: Winner of on-campus marketing campaign contest; held a fundraiser for international student scholarship
Misc.: Got three letters of recommendation - one from the c.c.'s VP! (Is that a plus to my application?) And got a 99 on TOEFL (duh).

URM: No.

That’s all I have. Your help is appreciated! Wish you all successful transfers, too!

You’re doing great! I think you do have a good chance at UWM, and UM. It’s just a guess on your reach school since it’s a reach for anyone. Very impressed by how much you’ve turned your GPA around since HS. Good luck!!!

by the way, my husband is a UW Madison grad --great school and town!

@jkiwmom: Thanks for the compliment! And yes, I’ve heard of a lot of good things about Madison - figured it would be a nice place to study in. Mind if I ask what your husband majored in? @GregFields: I can’t just hope they don’t happen.lol But by what you said, would you mean it’s likely that Cornell will reject me? Just curious.

I think you’ll be an excellent applicant for any of those colleges. Ann Arbor might be a little competitive but Cornell will be the only one that I think will give you problems. I take if funding is not a matter of importance seeing as how Cornell and U mich are 37k+

Cornell is just ANNOYING. They seem to love to deny every single one of my friends with perfect academic records. My brother 3.88 good ECs great SAT great high school junior transfer was denied for Business twice. 3 of my friends applied, one psyc, other two political science, All 3 denied they ended up with acceptances to UCB, UCLA, USC, in fact all of the Ivys denied all 4 othe them. My brother got into Columbia GS after being denied by Columbia University. Write an essay and write it good. That is my only advice.

…I’ll give it a wow. It makes me wonder how random the selection is. I’ve paid a visit, got a “thanks for visiting” letter from the admissions, and mentioned my visit in my essay along with why Cornell, my work experience and such, so I’ll just look forward to what’s next. That said, are you in college already or are you transferring to somewhere as well?

Unfortunately I was an incorrigible drunk my freshman year so I will not be applying to UCB lol. I am going to Rutgers University as a OOS next student this spring as a junior. My gpa took a tank 2nd (got 2 Cs :((( )semester so I cant really apply to any of the really high level schools my max reach would probably be UCSD lol

That’s pretty sad to hear. But I think Rutgers can’t be bad as a starting point, esp. if you look forward to pursuing graduate studies. Let’s just hope we’ll meet one day at a top graduate school!
