Your SAT Score, March 2011

2090 (pretty good for my first time with no prep and going to bed at 1am :D)

Critical Reading: 590 (facepalm)
Math: 740
Writing: 760 (76/9)

Reading: 670
Writing: 700
Math: 800

Total: 2170 I really want to go to some Ivies, do you think I may have a chance?
(I really do not want to take the SAT again)

^probably not, I would take it again; I got a 2270 and was rejected from the ivies I applied to.

I would NOT take it again. It is often said that 2200 is the threshold where SAT scores will no longer be the reason you were not accepted. You are 30 points away from that. There is no need to take it again; instead, focus on more important things like EC’s, essays, etc.

What if you have a 2130 on a past SAT, but a combined 2170 using Score Choice? Would you recommend to retake the test if I want to apply to Ivies?

EDIT: my combined scores are (2170):
M: 700
W: 800
C: 670

On march SAT (2060):
M: 700
W: 700
C: 660

:(

I have to say I disagree with not taking it again. SAT score matters a lot for some reason, and I would say 2250 is more of an acceptable threshold.

Stevenf, so you would recommend a superscored 2170 to take it again?

I think you should retake that 2170. It’s hard to get into Ivies with that unless if you have great EC’s.

M 680
CR 730
W 800 (79 MC, 10 essay)
Total 2260
Is this good enough for Rice? Hispanic female in Texas if that helps

I would recommend a superscored 2170 to retake, depending on where you want to go. If you are focused on the Ivies or top schools like UCB, UCLA, Northwestern, etc. a higher SAT score is always better. However, from everyone I’ve talked to, 2300+ is the golden range; in my opinion however, I would guess that 2250 is okay. If you can get those superscored, and your schools superscore, that would be best.

2260 should be fine in my opinion for Rice, but does Rice look at mainly the M and CR? I would try to improve your Math and Critical Reading, but 2260 is a great score. I don’t know what Hispanic female will do for you in Texas, but good luck!

Thank you. I will take it again!

how do you know what you got on the essay…

is 2290 viewed more similarly to 2200 or 2300?

What was the CR curve? I think this CR curve was ****. I didn’t do as well as I thought; when I told my mother about my CR score she was like, “Oh my god, that’s really terrible. Do I need to sign you up for ESL (English as a second language) when you go back to school?” :P

Also, I posted my scores wayyyyy earlier, but I did not include the breakdown for my writing score. It was an 80 on the MC and a 10 on the essay.

someone pleaseeeee tell me how to view the essay. im dying.

One thing I learned from CollegeConfidential is that there are always people better than me. I would be ecstatic with my SAT score, go onto CC to share my success, and then see the seemingly hundreds of others who score better than me. Don’t dwell on other people’s scores and focus on your own goal. Doing so will only make you more upset with yourself.

Anyways, for math. Always draw a diagram or write out what the questions asks. For example, if the question is, “THere are 8 blue pins, 2 black pins, and 9 yellow pins in a bag, how many pins are not yellow?” I would first scribble on my test: 8blu, 2bla, 9y. total: 19. THen look at the stem of the question. For questions that are related to geometry, don’t be afraid to draw the diagrams in your test booklets.

math-790
writing-740
CR-710

2240 total

this was my first time taking it and only really studied the week and a half before. Living in Michigan, I’m much more familiar with the ACT, so my question is, should I stick with this score or try to take it again and improve on critical reading and writing? I got a 34 on the ACT (11 essay), 35 superscored (some schools like UChicago superscore ACT). The best school I would apply to would be Princeton early decision.
any advice is appreciated, thanks.

wow does everyone on collegeconfidential score >2300 their first time taking the SAT?

major e-stats in here

CR: 730
Math: 760
Writing: 800

Total: 2290 (awkward threshold)

First time taking it. Will most likely re-take in June for a better superscore and hopefully up my CR score. Really happy though!

@CurveDestroyer by “e-stats” do you mean made up? I mean, I guess that’s possible. This one guy at my school applied ED this year (we’re still juniors) to MIT because he’s positive he’s a genius or something. Anyway, he told everyone he got a 2380. He got denied (though he said he was deferred and then denied). Another girl I know talked to her parents’ friend last week, who happened to be on the admissions committee at MIT and reviewed the boy’s application. Turns out he got a 2230 and was flat out denied. So honestly, if someone does it in real life, there is always the possibility that someone may have done it on the internet, where it is obviously easier to do so.

However, I really did NOT lie about my score. I really did get a 2330. But I studied for it. Like, a lot. So I didn’t say “didn’t study, still got a 2400!!!” like some postings. My theory is that even if some people aren’t lying about their scores, which they very well may not be doing, it is likely that they lied about not studying. Because although intelligence does contribute to doing well on the SAT, the format does not really lend itself well to spontaneous amazing scores sans studying. CB tries to trick you on the SAT, and unless someone was relatively familiar with what to look for, their natural intelligence would lead them to choose other answers regardless, resulting in scores <2300.
