Your Vote for the Best TV or Movie Spy

Someone mentioned David McCallum in another thread, so I have to admit that I was a big fan of Ilya Kuryakin and ‘The Man From Uncle.’ Whom did you like and why?

Napoleon Solo
Ilya Kuryakin
Peter Gunn
Secret Agent (Patrick Magoohan)
The Saint (Roger Moore or George Sanders)
Our Man Flint (James Coburn)
James Bond (Sean Connery)
James Bond (Roger Moore)
James Bond (Pierce Brosnan)
James Bond (David Niven)
Kelly Robinson
Alexander Scott
Jim West

Maxwell Smart and Agent 99

LakeWashington, there is a paucity of women on your list.

Emma Peel, as played by Diana Rigg in The Avengers.

Miss Marple… Well, not a spy exactly, not on the surface anyway :)

I loved, loved George Smiley.

Ben Kingsley.

Cate Blanchett
[Charlotte Gray (2001)](Charlotte Gray (2001) - IMDb)

I liked the ‘Mission Impossible’ people -

 • Jim Phelps (team leader)
 • Barney Collier (technical guru)
 • Rollin Hand (undercover expert with all accents)
 • Barbara Bain (undercover)
 • Dana Lambert (undercover)

They had clever ways to infiltrate and subvert - true spies (for a TV show).

Hands down.
Austin Powers

Sam Neill as Sidney Reilley in “The Ace of Spies”

Ian Holm and Mel Martin in the BBC produced “Spy: Hook, Link, and Sinker” series by Len Deighton.

Alec Guiness as James Wormold in “Our Man in Havanna”
and Ian Richardson as real life art historian/spy Anthony Blunt in the film “Blunt” AND with Anthony Hopkins as Guy Burgess.

(I like my martinis shaken not stirred and my spys British)

One vote each for Boris and Natasha!

“Natasha! Hand me Bomb to blow up Moose and Sqwirrrr-el!” :)

First off Jedberg from the British series “The Edge of Darkness”
Second Boris and Natasha
I also loved the character played by Robert Redford in, I think the movie is called, “Spies Like Us” or maybe it is “Spy Game”, not sure. The one with Brad Pit.

Patrick McGoohan–aka "Number Six " in the British series “The Prisoner.”
I got the DVD set for my birthday…

I wanted to be Emma Peel when I was a kid.

That’s funny fallgirl, because most of my buddies WANTED Emma Peel when they were younger…

Bullet- I figured someone would say something like that :)

Most of the women on TV during my childhood were boring. I sure didn’t want to be June Cleaver or Carol Brady. Emma Peel got to wear great clothes, drive a sportscar and have cool adventures. Plus the guys liked her.

Maxwell Smart

Lee Merriweather (also on Mission Impossible)

Peter Graves

And I too loved Emma Peel

the Mission Impossible list is missing one important name:

Willy Armitage, muscle and misc. driving skills (!)

Don’t know if anyone mentioned this but we were watching an old NCIS a few weeks ago and Ziva asked Gibbs what Ducky looked like when he was young. With no hesitation Gibbs answered “Ilya Kuryakin” then they panned to a picture from the UNCLE days…I laughed out loud…it was great!

Here’s another vote for Mrs. Peel…:)

While they weren’t exactly spies, I LOVED Robert Wagner and Stephanie Powers in, what was that called, the Harts? or something like that. Such a cool couple, so in love and always doing cool things!

Loved everyone on Mission Impossible, especially Lee Merriweather.

Agent 99 for her cool wardrobe.

Wasn’t there a Girl from UNCLE too?

No love for Matt Damon/Jason Bourne?

My personal favorite is Harry Palmer/Michael Caine in The Ipcress File and Funeral in Berlin (great mid 60’s spy stories filmed on location in London and Berlin respectively). Richard Burton/Alec Leamas in The Spy who came in from the Cold for sheer grimness and broken lives.

Re Girl from U.N.C.L.E.: Stephanie Powers teamed up with Noel Harrison (Rex Harrison’s son) in the spin-off.
