We received a new modem from Xfinity that I believe has the router in it. There is just device on our desk now. DH thinks we can plug in the Eero somewhere back there and then use the extender. But I don’t know where you’d plug in the main device.
The Eero we have at the cottage I didn’t download the app. But I will when we get it set up at our main home. It sounds like it really is a good thing to have. Thanks for letting us all know that. I’m also going to download the app that displays the speed.
Marilyn, I see a few Speed test apps. There’s Speed Test & WiFi analyzer. Speed test by Ookla. SpeedTest with a dot after it. I downloaded that one because the others look like they were paid. When app on my phone says SpeedTest2. When I open it, it wants me to install and scan a QR code. Which one is your app?
I would not install any apps because speed can be tested from a browser. That makes me suspect these apps are doing other stuff you don’t want them doing.
Just go to fast.com on your browser. That’s all you need to test your Internet speed.
Anyone? Thanks in advance.
I did it, thank you. It says 2.1 mpbs. I remember the internet guy last weekend that installed Eero at our cottage said that is about what most extenders do. (I think he said 2.5), and that is not enough to steam shows. That’s when he said we needed the mesh system.
Upstairs by our main TV is 440 mbps!
Mine is plain Speedtest by Ookla but it’s several years old so likely current apps are different. Sounds like that other test does the job.
We used to have an independent extender with our old router to reach our far bedroom and it maybe got 30mbps. The signal would sometimes drop. The mesh system routinely gives that far space about 150. Sounds like you’ve got floors and walls blocking your signal to the basement so might need two additional mesh stations to bounce the signal past those obstacles. 2.1 is nothing!
Yes, you can plug the main Eero device into the back of the Xfinity modem/router. I am doing this too.
Per Eero, it’s a bit more complicated. They recommend putting your modem-router into bridge mode so it acts only as a modem and allows the Eero to be the router.
Ok, so this is so awesome! I can’t believe how involved this all is to cut that cord. But I’m determined.
Can someone help @VeryHappy with the issue of thinking shows were saved, but then it says “expired”. Anyone else have that issue, or know how to deal with this so it doesn’t happen in the future?
@VeryHappy
When I look at Six Nations website, it says it does not have livestreaming.
And I didn’t see USA in list of channels in different regions.
Can contact them with broadcast questions.
Maybe has something to do with broadcast rights.
Then, there is a youtube channel for six nations.
Good luck!
Thanks, @Hippobirdy . This is more info than we had before. I’ll send DH down this rabbit hole.
ETA: Huh. I just added the Six Nations Rugby channel – I was concerned there was going to be a cost, but apprently not. Also apparently, the three matches already played were in fact taped. I was able to move them to DH’s library. And I see that the upcoming matches are set to be recorded. So I guess that’s all we needed to do! That was easy.
@Hippobirdy , thank you so much.
OK, wise ones on CC. Answer me this.
I am finding that it takes forever to get to where I want to be to watch a channel on YouTube TV. Maybe there are shortcuts?? On our two TVs using the Roku stick, I have to do the following:
- Turn on TV with TV remote.
- Turn on Roku stick with Roku stick remote.
- On Roku stick remote (for all the following steps), click on Home button.
- Find and click on YouTube TV box on the screen.
- Click left to go to “Home” button (the little house icon).
- Click down 8 times to get to YouTube TV button.
- Click right to go to “Already a YouTube TV member? Start watching here.”
- Click on correct picture for Who’s Watching?
- Click right to go to “Live.”
- Click down to find live channel I want to watch.
- Click on that channel to get it to start playing.
So – are there any shortcuts??
There is a YouTube App and a YouTube TV app. I was also just going to the first one and having to find the Tv app. Do you see the YouTube TV app separately on your screeen?
I have a Harmony universal remote which eliminates the need to have multiple remotes and automates all the start-up sequence. I recommend looking into some such product, but here are some suggestions in the meanwhile:
- As @conmama said, make sure you are using the YouTube TV app and not just YouTube. Steps 4-7 from your list strongly suggest you’re in the wrong app.
- Your Roku Stick shouldn’t need to be turned on separately. Where is its power line connected? Try connecting it to a USB port on your TC. This should eliminate your Step 2.
- If your Roku remote has voice input (most do) - just hold that button and say “open YouTube TV”. That should eliminate step 3 and more.
- Create a list of favorite channels in YTTV, so you don’t have to go looking for these channels every time.
Hope that helps. It should reduce your start up sequence to steps 1, 9 and selecting the channel.
I am using Apple TV instead of Ruku. I only use Apple TV remote to turn on the tv, then click on YouTube tv. I am using YouTube tv app.
I wish you were my next door neighbor.
Oh my, I feel sheepish. You’re right – I was clicking the YouTube app, not the YouTube TV app.
