YouTube TV, cutting the cord

Thank you, @DadOfJerseyGirl !! I just fixed all three TVs; I had to do the tv. youtube.com/ start thing again and enter their code on my PC – once per TV for both DH and me. So, six times! But I think that has cured things.

I am not familiar with YTTV, but with that many steps, I’d consider a 3rd party programmable remote that has can do all of the above in a single click. For example, when I click “Watch Hulu” on the remote in my theater, it does the following steps. A single button click can do all of this.

  1. Turn on receiver
  2. Turn on projector
  3. Turn on room lighting
  4. Wait 12 seconds for everything to power on
  5. Set receiver to Roku stick input (AUX)
  6. Switch Roku to Hulu

Roku stick has codes for many streaming services build in to it, including one for Youtube streaming service (not sure if they mean YT or YTTV). If I was using a service without a code, then I’d move the YTTV (or other) app in the upper left most position, then change steps 6+ to below. Again all of the steps can be done with a single click on the remote.

  1. Turn on receiver
  2. Turn on projector
  3. Turn on room lighting
  4. Wait 12 seconds for everything to power on
  5. Set receiver to Roku stick input (AUX)
  6. Click home twice on Roku (to move cursor to known starting point)
  7. Click right to move cursor to YTTV app
  8. Click enter to open YTTV app

My personal hot take is that switching from cable or satellite to a service like YouTubeTV, Sling, DirectTV Now, etc. isn’t full “cord-cutting.” It’s just swapping your “provider” to a streaming-based one. And with prices for YouTubeTV (after promotion) starting at over $70/month, it’s truly a digital analogue for cable.

It took years to convince my wife to cord cut and when we did we did it gradually and briefly had YouTubeTV (when the promotions used to be better). But now we have no general channel provider, just a bunch of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, etc. And we’ve missed nothing. Between the combo Disney/Hulu/EPSN service and some of the other doing live sports and what you can stream online in real time, there has yet to be anything we haven’t been able to watch that we wanted to.

@civitas: What about live events, such as (if you’re into it) political debates, or sports?

I’m making progress! So, I talked to DH today about the Eero modem bridge. I pulled off those instructions and the Xfinity instructions and told him it was too complicated for me to u derstand and I’m thinking of talking to the GeekSquad to do it. I think normally he could eventually figure it out, but doesn’t feel like it. He actually shook his head ok. But then I remembered Xfinity has “pods”, which I thought were just regular extenders. I looked them up and they said they were high power mesh extenders.

Long story short, I bought one today, installed and downloaded myself (don’t laugh, that in and of itself was a big deal for me). Went to setting in the TV, put in my network ID and poassword (thank you all for even helping me figure that out) and……YES! Connected to Netflix, found YTTV and had to go thru that process again. I’m so excited! Now 2 more TV’s to go before I cancel. The TV in the workout room in the basement I need to get a Roku stick.

I’m getting there.

We’re all set up on all three TVs, but I’m not going to cancel until April 1, I think. DH is taking to this verrrrrrrry slowly. Whenever he’s watching TV, I ask him if he’s watching YouTube or cable, and half the time he tells me he’s still watching cable. Slow progress, but we’re going to get there.

I agree. I previously suggested physically disconnecting the cable from the back of the TV/set top box. You can plug it back in if absolutely necessary (and look into why that was the case). It’s a good test run before giving up cable service.

Well, I’d like to just go cold turkey, but there are – ummm, relationship issues to consider as well, so I’ve announced that the Drop Dead date is April 1. We can handle paying for both services until then. DH doesn’t like surprises.

I’m imagining the conversation with Optimum when I call to cancel our TV stuff. (We’re keeping internet and land line with them.) Rumor has it that they turn you over to the “Retention Department” and offer you great deals to keep you from leaving. It makes me furious – why couldn’t I have gotten a great deal now, or for the last 37 years that I’ve been with them??

@VeryHappy yep. When we quit Charter (which is now Spectrum) we started to get tons of offers for very reduced costs.

Too much too little too late.

We had had it with the cable company, and our minds were made up!

I think letting him know that you’ve given “yourselves” a month to get used to it is a good idea. I’ve not verbalized my timeline yet with DH, but I will this week.

I did make progress just a little last night. He finished completely putting in new toilet tank hardware (he can do stuff!), and sat down as I was finishing 60 minutes on YTTV. When I finished, commercials were playing and I said he could watch whatever he wanted. He reached for the remote and I said “it’s YTTV”. He always seems surprised. He said “I don’t know what to do to get back”. I had to explain it was just like any other streaming. He seems confused still by the whole concept of it. I had to explain it again. But it’s progress as he didn’t frown or act annoyed, but was fine with trying it himself.

I had to explain It’s just like any other movie/tv show streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, Prime….but we have all the cable shows…sports, news channels. I do think the homepage is a little confusing. So he navigated around and chose a movie. Small steps. I think he is a little impressed I’m actually doing this, especially getting the basement TV to work….you know, the 70” he had to buy but that he never watches.

Or maybe he was just feeling satisfied with himself for completely fixing the toilet and didn’t want to seem ungrateful at the work I’ve been doing to cut the cord and save money. Whatever it is, I’ll take it.

Sometimes for my DH, I have to write out instructions step-by-step. He is extraordinarily – ummmm – not savvy with technology.

For some reason he’s not been able to log in to the portal our PCP uses. So I logged in for him last night, on my computer but using all the passwords, etc. he provided me. I got in with no problem. I don’t know whether his inability to log in was due to the fact that he uses an Apple computer, or whether it was “user error.”

Yeah - I really don’t understand the purpose of the Home screen. It’s the default when you start it up, but I always immediately go to either Library or Live.

The type of computer shouldn’t matter.

Unfortunately you can’t change that on the TV, but if you’re watching on a computer you can bookmark the library or live tab and directly start from there.

TV #3 of 4 is complete! One more to go, but it’s hooked on the wall and I can’t tell if there is that hdmi outlet (is that what it’s called), to put a Roku stick in. DH will need to do that, ugh…I hate waiting around or feeling like I’m pestering.

Just making sure the way it’s on hooked on the wall doesn’t allow it to move/pivot? Our wall unit allows the tv to be tilted one way or another - so that might help you see the HDMI outlet.
