YouTube TV, cutting the cord

You’re the best!

I’d love to have more, but you just have to decide when enough is enough. Like cable. The difference with streaming is you’re not having to pay for all the fees like sports fee, broadcasting fee, cable box for all the TV,s and the tax on all that. It really adds up.

I agree about deciding how many subscriptions to have. They add up. We have four paid subscriptions (YTTV, Prime, Paramount+ and Peacock). Apple TV is free through our cell phone plan. That’s enough for us. We subscribed to Peacock at a great price (Black Friday deal) but probably won’t renew.

Why do you have all the streaming services at once? I catch up on the series I like with one streaming service, then subscribe to a different one. That makes it more simple and is far less expensive, particularly if you purchase subscriptions during sales.

My current subscriptions are:
Hulu + Disney without commercials – $0 (using $20/month CC entertainment credit)
Paramount+/Showtime without commercials – $0 (unlimited free trials)

At other times in the past 1-2 years, I’ve subscribed to Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, Peacock, Apple+, Starz, and MGM+ – never subscribing to more than 3 at once, and never paying more than $5/month total.

This is what I do. We only pay for YoutubeTV and Amazon Prime (but not for the videos). My daughter gets Disney and Hulu with her phone plan. We did a month of Netflix last month to catch up and then cancelled. Then I started a month of free Apple TV to catch up and will cancel. This works great for us.

Is Apple TV subscribtion for a year, or can you go month to month?

You can go month to month for Apple TV.

One thing I do on Amazon Prime: When I order something from Amazon, often they give you the opportunity to delay the delivery until a certain day of the week (my day is Thursday) in exchange for a digital credit of a few bucks (usually less than $3). I do that for most of my orders so that when I want to watch a Prime Video, it’s free. They just apply that digital credit.

You can get a 3 month free trial from a few places (google around to see) and then I just cancel when it is over.

Thanks to @Data10 this year I watched out for streaming (and other subscription deals) on Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Most of the major streaming channels offered some type of deal for a few months. I got Apple for 3 months for hardly anything - I might have got it through Best Buy? Can’t remember.

Put a reminder in your calendar to check out the deals next November!

Are the deals usually for first time users?

I’ve had Apple TV before and I was able to get the deal.

Edited to say I had the subscription previously and had been cancelled for awhile and then signed up again with the deal - but I didn’t EXTEND a subscription I already had.

I did get 3 months when I purchased my new phone a coup,e years ago but never watched it!

I have permission to cut the cord from DH, but he is hesitant to do it until March Madness is over. I’m inclined to agree because I don’t want to hear a THING if something goes wrong. It’s just another month.

And then it will be the start of the baseball season. And then something else will come up.

We just went cold Turkey.

@conmama: I totally, totally get it. I waited until after the Super Bowl to start our attempts.

As I said earlier, I’m ready to go anytime. DH is still dragging his feet. April 1 is the latest we’re going to do it.

@thumper1 in my house, that’s the truth! I live with avid sports fans (Dh got up early this morning to watch Man U game) so there was always something Dh or one of my kids was worried about missing if we cut the cord so we dragged our feet for a bit.

We finally cut the cord a year or two ago with no regrets. We have YouTube TV. No complaints from any of my sports fans.

We are big sports fans here too and we’ve found everything we’ve wanted to watch on YTTV.

March madness games are shown on CBS, TNT, TBS and Trutv which can all be accessed on YTTV.

Just like you we cut the cord cold turkey 4 years ago right before Covid began. We have an antenna so H can watch local news. With all the different streaming services and the deals we get we are never at a loss for something to watch.

YTTV’s March Madness coverage is actually fantastic. It gives you the option to watch multiple games at once (think splitting the screen into 2 or 4 with the sound coming from which game you click on) as well as real time stats, live bracket, etc. It will have all of the games being currently played on the Home Screen so you can just select which game you would like to watch from there rather than searching through the channel listings for the somewhat obscure channels CBS uses for the tournament. It makes following the tournament easier than cable and adds a more dynamic information factor as well. My 2 cents…he would actually be missing out by watching it on cable instead.

YTTV includes local TV stations too
