YouTube TV, cutting the cord

He said I could do it, but I don’t mind waiting. He’s really not like that, wanting to keep pushing it off.

That’s good to know!

How to you split the screen! This is such great info!

Houston, we have a problem.

We have three TVs. Two use the Roku stick and one is a smart TV. On the smart TV, for the last several hours, it’s been incredibly slow. When I press a button to go from here to there, it buffers – the spinning circle – for many many seconds, then when it finally goes to where I want to go, the TV show itself stops and starts. The TVs with the Roku sticks aren’t having any problems at all.

Our internet is working fine so I don’t think that has anything to do with it.

It has been mad raining for days now (so the ants we get every spring have come inside for relief) so I’m wondering if the weather has anything to do with it. When we used cable, the weather would sometimes mess things up.

Any ideas??

We have a Roku or fire stick on all TVs - and all TVs are “Smart”. Did you try disconnecting the one that’s giving you trouble from your internet - and then reconnecting?

I did read somewhere, either on this thread or another, that Smart TV’s work better with Roku sticks. Figures, right?

We too have ROKU, FireStick and Apple TV (we take a spare ROKU to VRBOs) but haven’t switched to YouTubeTV or HuluTV for a couple of reasons. I’ve not had any issue with Comcast for internet and dropping the Cable TV raises the internet only cost considerably. By the time we add our three streaming channels, it gets close to where we are now. Also every family member changing their personal email that are on every contact info for the last 30 years to a their gmail account seems a little daunting. I’m sure lots will be missed. We have TV hookups in every room of the house except bathrooms, dining and living rooms but use our own eqpt, not rented from cable company (actually 1 may be rented). As much as I dislike paying for much of what we don’t watch, our cable tv bill plus streaming is not near as high as some listed above. One of my sons shared his Paramount+ account with us and the other shared his Max account - so those channels are free to us at this time. We recently dropped Netflix as no one watched it to add on Acorn for half the price (really enjoying this channel). We have only have the expanded basic Comcast coverage which provides almost all of the channels we watch and we do not pay for HD service since we can get Xfinity through the ROKU and see anything HD that way. We pay $267 monthly for internet, cable tv, and 3 streaming channels (there are lots of free ones out there as well with entertaining shows). I think I’m one of the few that still likes my reliable cable TV and fast enough internet service.

I lived in Hartford for few years. When I was there there was only one internet/cable provider. I was paying around 200 for very basic services. You would think NYC would be more expensive, but I was paying around 100 for similar services until my building negotiated with RCN (now Astound) to get better rate. I was paying 55 for internet/phone/cable.
I am paying 15 for the internet and 75 for YTTV. I am happy not to have to deal with TiVo box and unlimited recording. To me YTTV is a lot user friendly.
I posted above, by hooking up Apple TV to the smart tv makes picture clearer with less hiccup or delay.

That would be daunting. That’s why we just created five new gmail email accounts to hold our YTTV profiles. Nothing vital or personal associated with those accounts. Signed in once and never again.

We would probably go to another internet service that costs much less than Comcast w/out cable but that requires a change in the email address. Did your internet service cost go up dramatically when you removed the cable service?

Do you have other providers that serve your area? We had Optimum (Cablevision) for a decade and the price crept way up from the initial triple pay deal to where we were paying $240 per month for cable, TV and landline. Luckily we had Fios TV enter our service area and I switched to them for $24.99 Internet service. I have YTTV during football season, and no need for a landline. So my monthly cost dropped dramatically.

That is not necessary, as I mentioned in a post above. You don’t need gmail addresses for YTTV.

Sorry, I’m not following. Who do you pay for internet service? Does YouTube also an internet provider? My internet service with Comcast goes up quite a bit if I drop the cable but keep them as an internet provider.

Verizon FiOS. They have great pricing (at least in my area)

No our internet service didn’t go up much at all. Perhaps because we are in a competitive market that pits Comcast vs Verizon Fios. We have Fios fiber for $60/mo (that also includes a landline. Yes we are dinosaurs slowing weaning off our landline) and YTTY rounded to $80 for $140 total. We could add all streaming services we like and probably not approach the $267 you are paying. What makes it an easier decision for us is that we have a second home so we don’t have to pay for cable at both locations since we use streaming. Unfortunately, the second home is served by a cable monopoly and we actually pay $20 more there for no landline and slightly slower speed than the Fios.

We are AT&T cell phone service users, would we have to have to go to Verizon for cell (I agree they are a better service). Do you know if we can transport our current phone numbers? I should check into this option. If it’s close in price, it probably would not be worth the move…lastly YTTV did not have Bally Sports South to cover regular Braves games so we would end up adding something to follow them (if there is something). Again, will check it out, so thanks for the Verizon idea - I forgot they are now bigger than a cell phone service.

While I’m confident they could port your numbers I see no need for you to switch to Verizon. It’s probably easiest just to go with Comcast internet and YTTV and keep your AT&T. I would expect Comcast to have a reasonably competitive internet-only option for a reasonable download speed. Internet companies try to upsell you on speeds you don’t require. I’d wager that most households would do fine at 100 MBS or above and they always try to sell more.

Go to your local Comcast website and see what they are offering for internet only. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. I expect you’d have to subscribe to Ballys separately and use their streaming service to watch the Braves although many game televised nationally will still be on YTTV.

I did that about 6 months ago and when I added everything up (using YTTV and HuluTV as my options) and the streaming services I would need to add to get what I have now that I like to watch, it was pretty much about the same or more, I know it did not make sense at that time. I do check every year or so to see if much has changed, my Comcast honestly has not gone up that much but some of the streaming channels have (like Netflix which we dropped). I will continue to check once a year or if Comcast starts dropping channels from their expanded basic. We are at the 100 MBS speed and used that for comparison shopping. Yes, I can get Braves national games on almost all the options but not the regular games which appear on AT&T and Fubu (I think). I think what I’ve figured out on this post is that as much as I hate paying for cable, that is probably our best option at this time. I will continue to check once a year or if Comcast starts dropping channels from their expanded basic.

We bundle our cable with Internet and home phone (necessary for security system - to get it set to our cell basically requires a whole new system). Plus two DVR boxes.

Oh, did I mention streaming services too?

But, a good tip I learned here is that Apple TV can be month to month, cancel and come back. I’ll have to look into that. We had it for a month to binge Ted Lasso, but now there are a few things on there I wouldn’t mind seeing.

We are retirees, and home a lot. TV is our main source of entertainment so I don’t mind having a lot of choices. I don’t think hubby is ready to go completely cable-free, but he does love his ESPN Plus.

We also keep home phone just because of our (ADT) alarm system.
We need to cut THAt cord someday too.

You sound like us–retired, we went without many things as we raised our kids. Now we can enjoy luxuries, kinda spoiled by the DVR, voice commands, having our streaming apps linked to the X1 box, etc.
