We did. Cost about $150 if I remember correctly. Totally worth it to get rid of the landline.
Congratulate us…we have now joined the elite ranks of the cable cutters. We have found a way to live in a world without cox TV (we still have internet and landline (a necessary for us).
But did you use this thread to help you do it?!
Congratulations!! I will be following you soon. A few more weeks.
Indeed - shared much of it with my love as we made the decisions!
Congratulations! I’m so glad the thread helped. DH actually said this past weekend that we should just get all the equipment and take it in! I couldn’t believe it. But I think the steps should be calling and having them take it down, make sure the internet is working properly….then take in the equipment,
How are you all doing it?
I think anyone who wants a sleek looking flat screen shouldn’t have cable. But I know if my internet should ever go out then I would be in trouble. I wonder if I could use my phones hotspot as wifi for my tv.
We started with the 7 day free trial, logged in all the regular shows we record. Hid the cable remote so I wouldn’t be tempted to use it. Spent 5 days playing with the YouTube TV, found it to be pretty amazing. Called Cox today and they’re coming to disconnect and pick up the equipment in the next 5 days.
Easy for us.
Thanks. I think I’ll call Xfinity and hopefully they will just come and get the stuff.
I’m impressed your cable companies come and get the stuff. When we ditched Charter (which is now Spectrum), DH packed everything up and we had to return it ourselves. Which we happily did!
Yeah, we have to return ours to a brick and mortar and when I closed my mom’s house I had to disconnect and bring to a UPS store to return (Comcast). Maybe make sure they don’t charge you a fee for coming out to disconnect and take the equipment!
And make sure you get some kind of receipt that says your balance on your account is $0. When we disconnected, I had that receipt. Then we got a bill for $5 and change. My husband dealt with Charter on that one. They couldn’t really tell him what the bill was for. You have to wonder how many people just pay it because it’s only $5 or so. It took a LONG time on the phone. All my husband wanted was an explanation of what the bill was for…since we had a receipt that said our balance was $0.
Can I say I don’t miss dealing with the cable company…,at.all.
When we have had to return both Verizon and Xfinity internet equipment, they had a deal where you bring it to a UPS store (not even packaged) and they give you a receipt right there and send it back to the cable company. They were very specific about which pieces of equipment they wanted - router, set top box, DVR etc. I don’t think they were interested in either the cables or remotes.
I have been following along ,but I’m confused regarding changing email addresses. If you have Comcast and disconnect service, do you lose your Comcast email address?
You’ll probably keep comcast service for the internet (unless you have good competition from your likes of Fios. That said I’m almost positive you can keep your comcast email. In the early days I seem to recall friends paying a nominal fee to get it but the FAQ I goggled seems to indicate you keep it free as long as you use it every 90 days?
Anyway, we were early adopters of free email services (like gmail) when we lost our AOL address by ditching dial-up. Now it doesn’t matter who provides our internet.
We switched to a local city internet provider (cheap, reliable - rated as one of the best in US). After we cancelled the Comcast internet, our comcast id has stayed active many years. I assume that will still be true when we someday cancel Infinity TV service.
I’ve been able to access my aunt’s Comcast/Xfinity email accounts first as her POA and now as the executer of her will. Her internet/cable/phone services have all been cancelled for more than 6 months now. She lived in Boston and I am in NJ - I’ve had no problems.
Thank you all! Just like other posters, this is going to be a process. Baby steps!
We do have the option for FIOS internet.
I have Spectrum too (used to be Charter). I pay for a bundle (cable, internet, VOIP). If I get rid of cable, my internet and VOIP go up and the cost is more than the bundle. I live in a small town and there is no other choice for internet. I’d love to ditch Spectrum. There customer service IME is not great.
We only had one cable choice for internet, but we now have our internet through ATT. I’d check to make sure there are not additional internet options. We also live in a small town (and a sort of rural one too).
