YouTube TV, cutting the cord

The best they were offering to retain me was $79.99 for Internet only. I said no thanks, switched to FiOS where I have 200mbps Internet service for just $24.99/month. Even with the additional $72 for YTTV that’s huge savings from the $290 I used to pay Optimum. So happy to be rid of them!

@VeryHappy i got a receipt from the cable folks when I dropped off my stuff…saying that my account balance was $0. Still…we got a bill for $5 and change. Um…no! Our balance was $0. So DH called and it took about an hour. They claimed it was a charge they sent to everyone. For what?? DH finally got to some supervisor who adjusted the bill. Even the supervisor couldn’t explain exactly what it was for.

Imagine how many people just write a check for $5 or so. I’m betting a lot. And for what??

The last two times I swapped out routers, I configured the new one so the network name and password were the same as the old one - so, no need to reconnect to a new network on every.single.device. Tech support should be able to walk you through it if it’s not obvious. I’m surprised the “guy” wasn’t aware of that possibility.

Then again, if you’re concerned about people you may have given your wifi password to years ago, maybe it’s good to change it up.

Thanks, @O2BonCC . Good point, but I’m not concerned. The only people we’ve given it to are family and close friends.

So our network is “HouseholdLastName Network.” You’re suggesting I use the same name and PW again?? Is it really that easy?? (I just figured out that otherwise we’d have to change 2 wifi extenders, 3 computers, 2 Roombas, 2 phones, an iPad, and 3 Roku sticks. Thatsa lotta changes!)

Another question, however. The router he gave me is a D-Link DIR-868L. I’m going to change routers anyway – to this one or, if The Group here advises, to another, better one. Is the one he gave me worth changing to? Or is it almost obsolete?

You all are wonderful. I really appreciate your advice.

Something with technology is easy?? I’m amazed!!!

Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

There’s probably something to that. When we first upgraded, they recommended using the 5g connection for the tv if it showed up as available. So I did, but the next day it was gone and I had to reconnect to the 2.4.

After seeing your post, I tried again with the 5.0. Seems like every day or so, the tv loses it, but (after trial and error) rebooting the tv (which only takes a minute or so) finds the connection again, and so far, no microwave interference.

So, thanks for the suggestion, and I hope I haven’t dragged this too far off topic.

Sorry, no direct knowledge. But searching online, people seem to think it’s an “acceptable” router. Which is in line with what I’d expect for an ISP provided router.

It’s been 2 months since I started this thread and with ALOT of help from you, I cut the cord today!! Easy, seamless. I’ll take the equipment back tomorrow.

I’m paying for internet at 2 properties and YouTube TV I can access at both. Total bill is $321 for both homes. I was paying $603. I am saving $3,384 a year! Actually more, because we go on vacation rate for $10 a month at the cottage for 6 months. So our savings will be closer to $4k

The only semi regret is the phone. I never used it and all we got were spam calls, but I liked having another number and now I have to take my phone with me upstairs at night. But I really am sick of the constant spam.

Thank you all.

I think in a couple of months that land line will be a distant memory that you won’t miss!

You gave many of us who would like to cut the cord hope that we can do it one day!

You can get an internet phone like Ooma or Magic Jack. You buy the hardware and pay monthly fees. When you go on vacation, just take the receiver (Ooma telo) with you, plug it into your router and you have phone service.

We had 2 phone numbers with our cable provider. I got rid of one but kept the other as I have needed an old fashioned fax quite a bit lately (I’m the executor of my aunt’s estate). As soon as that’s mostly done that number will be cancelled as well.

I still “use” the no longer in service number as it is attached to several grocery store digital discount stores without any problems.

Enjoy your extra money!

Thank you! Just got back from taking all the equipment. I feel relief!

We cut cable years ago and never looked back. Turns out the only shows we were watching were the ones on the local networks. And they were on all on Hulu the day after airing. Nowadays, shows are so bad, it’s not even worth paying for the streaming service to watch it. “Loki” stunk so bad, I decided to end Disney Plus after they doubled their price.

Every year or two when I have to bargain with Cox about new bundle discounts I’m tempted to cut the cord. I actually watch most of my stuff streaming, other than news. But husband watches tons of sports and a variety of news channels. Plus the tv he uses is a dumb tv so we would need a stick (or new tv). And knowing the issues he periodically has with phones and his computer, I would rather not make him learn how to find his way. I would have to be on instant call for every time he forgets what to do! It was hard enough for him to learn how to get our vaguely smart tv to pull up Thursday night football on Amazon Prime. Add in a few more menus to navigate - forget it!

At least even though our rate is an increase from the last year, it is still lower than two years ago. Granted since then we’ve dropped some packages like the one that included BBC because Doctor Who left them. And I don’t need Starz because I’m done with Outlander. Etc. etc. etc.

The new rate is fixed for two years so we’ll see how we feel in 2026.

I was at the Optimum store this afternoon to turn in my routers, since I just installed a mesh system. While I was waiting, I overheard a man on the phone with their customer service people.

“No, NO deal you give me will change my mind.”
“Stop talking. I am not going to keep my service with you. You can say anything you want and it’s not going to make a difference.”
“I want to terminate, cancel, stop my service. I can’t say it any more clearly.”
“It’s none of your business where I’m moving my service.”

Really, you can’t make this stuff up.

With every thing else in life you will cut the cord when you cannot take it anymore.

Or when you need to buy a new TV.
